Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Memory Escobar.
Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been the friend with a camera. Even, before cellphone cameras I brought my old school cool pix, my grandfather’s film camera or disposables everywhere. I’ve always loved capturing the emotions of the moment, candid portraits, and giving those memories to my friends and family. So, I naturally wanted to study this more. I studied video production in high school and media production in college. I also happened to play D1 varsity lacrosse for UNC-Chapel Hill so after I graduated, I combined my love for athletics and story telling by working for the athletic department for 5 years. My favorite part was diving in deep with an athlete’s story. I loved photographing and filming their journeys as they talked about overcoming struggles, celebrating accomplishments and their life outside of being an athlete. I treasured showing student-athletes giving back to communities, excelling in the classroom and all the behind the scenes moments that are rarely seen. I had amazing opportunities to travels to several NCAA Tournament final fours and National Championships embedded with the team, as I followed their journey all year. I even got a few chances to run out of the field with the team, cameras snapping and recording, as the final buzzer sounded and our school color’s confetti is blasted out of canons in celebration of the greatest college athletic achievement.
On the side, I took photos of my friends, family and engagements. I slowly built up the courage to dive into weddings. I found the process is very similar. Videoing a behind the scenes, all access highlight video for a team parallels the intimate moments of a wedding day. Both involve capturing the preparation, the buzz in the room as something exciting is about to happen, the love between teammates/family/friends as everything leads to this day, then, you have to be ready for the big moment. They won’t score or kiss again if you miss it! Then, time to celebrate.
Moving to Miami 6 months ago, my husband gave me the confidence to pursue full time wedding photographer and videographer. Here in Miami, I love the cultures, colors, languages and opportunity to meet couples and families from everywhere. It’s been the most amazing and beautiful time to explore new creative roads and collaborate with other talented and passionate people. I’ve grown in so many ways, as an artist, businesswoman and story teller. These past few months, I’ve been so humbled by the wonderful network of wedding vendors and wouldn’t be where I am with out them. I can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Moving to a new place always offers some challenges. I had lots of notice that we would be moving so I tried to plan ahead as much as possible. But the first few months here in Miami were tough trying to connect with the right people, get my name out there as a passionate photographer, finding new spots to photograph and learning about the Miami way. Once, I found my tribe of amazing and welcoming wedding friendors (friends+vendors) it made the process so much smoother and easier. I’m forever grateful for their help! My suggestion to anyone having a tough time breaking in is to just reach out to people you admire and see what happens!
Please tell us about Laura Memory Photography & Videography.
I’m a photographer, videographer and photo editor. I photograph and video anything from couples, families, weddings, to events and landscapes. I also really love filming promotional videos for photographers. I think it’s amazing to hear another photographers story, tag along with them to a session and capture their work and personalities! I’ll tell anyone’s story! I also love being an editor. Several photographers outsource their editing to me. I love taking other photographers raw work, molding it to their style and giving them back a wedding quickly and consistently. I’m known for candid, light filled and genuine moments. My sessions are very care free and down to earth. I love photographing/videoing the in between moments. I’m active! I like t to get kids jumping, couples laughing and I’ll definitely get in the water with you to get that memory. I’m proud of my behind the scenes work. I don’t just show up on wedding day, I love the entire process! I love meeting with couples to hear their story and get to know them, checking in often to see how I can help, texting to decides on details, and going above and beyond to make them feel celebrated and loved on their wedding day. I’m pretty outgoing and just a people person, so I fit in just about anywhere! 😀
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memories all involve being outside. Whether it’s camping in the North Carolina mountains with my family, running around my grandparents in Chilean farm or building forts with my friends in the woods. I think my connection to the earth certainly inspires my art. I love using the sun and natural backgrounds in portraits and to set the scenes in my videos.
