Meet Paul Capote of Paul’s General Landscaping in Fort Lauderdale to Homestead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Capote.

Paul, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been attracted to business ventures. As a junior in highschool, I started a small pressure cleaning and airplane detailing service. I then ventured off into landscaping due to the high demand. My father has a very strong work ethic and taught me to always respect plants and made me do tons of yard work. Once I saw the bigger picture in the craft of landscaping, I decided to do everything I could to duplicate my knowledge to my team. I now have 2 fleets and I’m managing about 100 properties.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The landscape industry is not for the faint hearted to say the least. Many things are taken into account such as extreme weather and physical fatigue. It wasn’t easy finding people that take pride in a job that is constantly criticized.

One of the biggest set backs was in 2014 when one of my trucks were stolen and I was stripped from at least $10,000 worth of machinery. Landscape tools are very vulnerable.

After all of that, I’ve stuck to my plan. I have overcome plenty of obstacles and I will overcome many more.

Please tell us about Paul’s General Landscaping.
We specialize in landscape maintenance and design. I like to offer full service of property preservation — such as tree trimming, mulch, pressure cleaning and any other projects my clients have in mind. I teach my crew that sometimes it is the smaller details that people notice.

I like to say, I am the next generation of the landscape industry. Many new clients simply tell me that they had to change landscape companies due to the boss being too old to possibly work safely. On the other hand, most of my crew is anywhere from 20 to 30 years of age. They definitely have a lot of energy to get any job done efficiently.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Fire fast, hire slow!

Don’t let 1 crew member infect your team culture. There have been situations, where I have been too lenient and it has delayed my growth.
