Today we’d like to introduce you to Nargiza Dadabaeva
Hi Nargiza, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey as a mural artist began three years ago when I moved to America to pursue a master’s degree. Now, I am immersed in the vibrant art industry, perfecting my skills in mural painting and dreaming of expanding my creative endeavors.
The path I’ve walked has been winding and full of intrigue, with its fair share of challenges that make the journey worthwhile. My love for art began early, thanks to my mother, who enrolled me in a specialized art school. This passion carried me through college and into an institute in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Eager to broaden my horizons, I moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, to study at the Academy of Arts, where I discovered airbrushing. This new medium allowed me to experiment on a grand scale, transforming walls into vast canvases.
After honing my skills, I returned home to Uzbekistan and established a business, creating murals for restaurants, venues, and events. This venture brought me recognition and success. Yet, I felt a calling to explore further. Inspired by the world-renowned murals of Wynwood, I applied for a master’s program in the United States. Receiving my acceptance letter was one of the happiest moments of my life.
Living in America, I’ve encountered a plethora of fascinating individuals. My enriching journey began at the university, where I was struck by the stark contrast in how people here freely express diverse viewpoints—a refreshing change that motivates me as an artist to continue my endeavors in the U.S. Meeting Maxence Doytier was particularly transformative, opening new avenues in my creative work. Maxence, a vibrant individual who treasures his craft, has been a wonderful collaborator over the past two years.
Currently, I am working on a series of paintings that delve into the dynamics of social media interaction. This series explores both the positive aspects—such as the unprecedented opportunities that social media offers—and the negatives, including the discrepancies between online personas and real-life identities. Social media allows individuals to curate their image, often portraying themselves in a light that differs from their reality, which I find to be a captivating subject. I employ a mix of materials like magazines, mirrors, acrylic paints, canvas, and wood panels to give a voice to my observations, aiming to convey significant messages through my art.
This theme is unexpectedly linked to my personal life. Two months ago, I discovered that the person I had married a year ago was not who they appeared to be, leading me to the difficult process of divorce. Strangely, this personal challenge has deepened my connection to my current art series, as it mirrors the themes of authenticity and deception I explore in my work.
I am fortunate to work alongside my sister, Feruza Hirst, who has supported me throughout my life, sharing in both joyous and challenging times. She serves as both my manager and art director, executing her roles with a high level of professionalism for which I am profoundly grateful. Together, as sisters in one company, we are poised to gain momentum and grow with renewed vigor.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think I’ve already mentioned all the challenges in my story.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently working on the series of paintings that explore the emotions essential to forming connections, such as vulnerability and openness. My paintings delve into the dynamic between our desire for connection and the challenges we face in both digital and real-world relationships. They invite viewers to reflect on how these emotional landscapes shape our sense of self and our bonds with others.
My work mirrors the complexities of our online interactions, highlighting the tension between attraction and apprehension. This duality of digital and physical personas is central to my narrative, prompting viewers to consider the authenticity of their online selves and their impact on real-world relationships.
The collage technique I use reflects the transient nature of our virtual environment. By layering magazine snippets, acrylic paints, and reflective materials, I create surfaces that symbolize the fleeting relevance of our digital projections. My art challenges viewers to discern between what is temporarily visible and what truly endures, fostering a critical perspective on the fluidity of our interconnected lives.
As a mural artist, I strive to transform blank walls into vibrant narratives that resonate with the community. My art explores the intersection of color, form, and emotion, creating immersive experiences that invite viewers to pause and reflect.
I have had the privilege of bringing my creative vision to diverse spaces, including resource centers, private residences, and restaurants. Each project is a testament to the power of public art in fostering connection, inspiring change, and celebrating the unique spirit of each place I touch. Through my work, I aim to ignite imagination and provoke thought, making art accessible and alive in the heart of every community.
