Meet Lucas G. Irwin of REBEL Mindfulness in Kendall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas G. Irwin.

Lucas, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
About 1 year after my first daughter was born, it all really began to sink in. I was beginning to realize just how often I was physically there, by my mind and attention were somewhere else. As an entrepreneur and CEO of Steelhouse Fitness, there always seemed to be something that needed my attention, a problem that needed to be addressed or an idea that needed to be explored. After seeing how fast that first year of my daughter’s life seemed to pass, I felt an urgency to take control and find a means by which I could better harness and direct my attention, perspective and awareness. For me, this was mindfulness.

After much research, it was pretty obvious that a mindfulness was the answer I was looking for; and the science was there to support it. I had dabbled in meditation before and had read a number of books on Eastern philosophy, but never really dove all the way in and made it a priority. Heavily influenced by the writings of Jon Kabat-Zinn and Alan Watts, mindfulness got my full attention and became an important part of my daily routine. The changes were evident and obvious right away and improved virtually every aspect of my life and being.

Being in the health and fitness industry, helping others live healthier lives has always been my goal.

However, the more I got into mindfulness, the more I realized how detrimental a strong mindfulness practice is to our total health and well-being. Mindfulness is every bit as important as our physical training and nutrition and mindfulness can drastically improve the effectiveness of both. Offering anything other than all three began to feel like a drastic shortcoming.

I have since begun the process of integrating Mindfulness into my fitness facilities, in addition to creating REBEL Mindfulness. REBEL is currently conducting mindfulness workshops throughout Miami and the Country; introducing people to this incredible, life-altering practice that we are all fully capable of doing. There are a lot of misconceptions about meditation and what it entails; REBEL aims to clear a lot of that up in our workshops and provide that true science and benefits. REBEL will also be offering an 8-week Mindful Living courses in Miami (registration should will be opening late 2017).

REBEL Mindfulness is simply aiming to help people take control of their own minds and live better lives via mindfulness.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting REBEL has been a relatively smooth process, in comparison to opening a fitness facility.

I have actually been very careful to build this business as stress-free as possible and really just ride the waves.

Essentially, mindfulness is the core component of our business model, not just the service we provide.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with REBEL Mindfulness – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We currently offer Introduction to Mindfulness workshops all over Miami. We work primary with companies, groups and businesses that contact us and arrange to have Lucas G Irwin come in for a 2-3 hour workshop. We also have corporate clients that we work with on a weekly basis; the benefits of brining mindfulness into the work environment are truly incredible. Starting at the end of 2017, we will begin offering our 8-week Mindfulness classes in Miami.

We are quite a bit different that many meditation instructors/studios. REBEL is purely science-based and is very careful not to tie in any mysticism, spirituality or any aspects of the practice that aren’t supported by research. Many attendees of our workshops have attended other similar workshops or classes and were turned off by all the stereotypical soft-talking, chakras, crystals and spiritual interlacing; finding our approach refreshing and easier to commit to. While we don’t have a problem with other methods, we just know that for a Western population those pills are hard to swallow; science isn’t.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our biggest upcoming plan is the introduction of the 8-week course. We are incredibly excited about this!
