Today, we’d like to introduce you to Shertara Brazil.
Hi Shertara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a little girl, I was a creative butterfly, fluttering between music, poetry, fashion, and glamour. In high school, I went for the full buffet, exploring every opportunity to unleash my talents. I modeled, danced, and even worked as a senior assistant teaching digital media at a magnet school! With all these gifts, I knew I was destined to be a shining star, but first, I had to find my niche. And that’s when the beauty world beckoned.
I started as an eager student, learning the tricks of the trade from my mother. It wasn’t long before I was honing my skills, getting better and better, and discovering the therapeutic benefits of this art form. With my MUA certification under my belt, I wanted to create a safe space for women to embrace their natural beauty, where the brush is just a tool to enhance what’s already there. It’s time to glow, queen, and let your inner beauty radiate!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Rewind to when I stepped into the beauty world – let me spill the tea! Picture this: a gazillion makeup gurus vying for the same sparkly crown I had my eye on. I rolled up my sleeves, hustled like a boss, and hey, still hustling today to get my shine on and show off my mad skills. Flashback to my victory lap at Virginia State University, strutted out with a Media Management Masters in hand, only to hit a pandemic plot twist. Internships? Zilch. Doors slammed shut.
The pandemic lingered like a bad houseguest until nearly 2023, testing me like a pro. But hey, I kept the faith, creating beauty content, assisting aspiring artists with development, and aiding entrepreneurs in brand-building. Fast forward to the world reopening – time to chase my dreams, right? Wrong! Three years post-graduation, I was hitting walls, brick by brick. Rejections piled high, pushing me to the edge of a funk.
Two degrees in hand, but doors stayed sealed, labeled ‘overqualified’ or ‘due to companies undervaluing and wanting to pay me for my worth.’ So, I did what any boss babe would do – I carved my own path, set my own rules, and owned my spotlight.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
Let’s dive into the musical side of things, shall we? Singing has always been my go-to escape since I was young, even making it to the honors chorus back in the 4th grade. Music has been my therapy, carrying me through the highs and lows of life. After graduating high school, I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising and Retail Marketing from Johnson and Wales of North Miami, followed by a Master’s in Fine Arts in Media Management from Virginia State University.
That’s when my ear for music evolved, and I began learning the ins and outs of what it takes for upcoming artists to make it as independent artists. I got advice from Spectacular of Pretty Ricky, dived into social networks and circles, and even became built my name in the nightlife world. I started managing two artists – one in Houston, Texas, and the other in Miami, Florida. But let me tell you, this industry can be a dark place, and being a manager is no cakewalk.
You don’t get paid unless your artist is making money, and they have to stay consistent to pursue their music career. Both of my artists were a headache, to be honest. One got caught up in the streets, and the other wanted to pursue music part-time, which put me back at square one. But then, I found my calling. I started working for a Music and Fashion blog, where I could step into my artist repertoire and give feedback, develop artists, and conduct interviews about their new music. I even got to interview one of my favorite gospel artists and my soror, Jekayln Carr.
You have to know your worth in this industry, whether you’re in the limelight or behind the scenes. Don’t let anyone dim your light. Make your own path, and show them the rising star that you are – that’s what I’m doing. I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be dropping my first EP in late 2024, so stay tuned! At Blessed Slayer Productions, we’re all about helping brands, small businesses, and upcoming artists get the recognition they deserve.
