Today we’d like to introduce you to Jakaria Jean-Louis.
Hi Jakaria, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I developed my love for nursing during my mom’s last hospital stay. She had been at Jackson Memorial for two weeks and the care she received before her passing was amazing. The nurses were so loving and compassionate which I felt matched my personality. I was 13 at that time, fast forward 20 years later and I’m genuinely in love with what I do. I’ve been in the nursing field now for ten years and I’ve practiced across a variety of specialties.
In 2020, due to the fragility of my own mental health, I decided to go back to school to complete my master’s, specializing in mental health. I currently have my own mental health office where I help children and adolescents, ages 5-17, who struggle with mental health disorders & life adjustments. I help them reclaim confidence, purpose, and joy through therapy, supplements, medications, and coaching.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I could say I wish it was a smooth road, but every bump made me who I am today. I gave birth to two children while in college. I survived a relationship full of turmoil & violence. I had an open case with the Department of Children & Families.
When people hear my story they think I’m rough around the edges, but I’m really a diamond that survived the pressure. I want those who hear my story to know that you can always change your outcome. It’s NEVER too late to change the narrative.
