Today we’d like to introduce you to Lise-Anne Jensen.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my career in electrolysis 4 years ago. I wanted to start my own business and I knew I wanted to venture into the beauty industry. I enjoy interaction with people and wanted to be of service. I had seen many women, both young and old who were dealing with unwanted, socially unacceptable facial hair growth. Imagine a young girl in her early 20s who has dark facial hair similar to a young adolescent boy or older women constantly keeping their chin down to hide the hair on their face. She is self conscious, her self esteem is low, and she is stressed by constantly trying to hide it in some way.
When you feel beautiful, your self-confidence is boosted. There is nothing better than to work with a client and see how happy they are at the end of the session. Providing this service gives me the opportunity to help people and make a difference in their lives.
Along the way, I have added micro-needling which helps with acne scarring ,fine lines and wrinkles , and hyper-pigmentation using the body’s own healing ability naturally. As well as Microblading which a form of semi-permanent makeup for the eyebrows creating hairlike strokes to mimic hair.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the beginning, I worked a corporate job during the day and would leave work to go to school at night 4 days a week and Saturdays. While I was in electrolysis school, I created my logo and website. I purchased my equipment with my savings and prepared myself to start. Once I graduated I opened my doors with no clients. I went to business networking meetings weekly and monthly to spread the word and build up business. Slowly over time my clientele began to grow. I always ask people how they find me. Many tell me “Google”. I like to say Google is my best friend. After the first year and a half, I knew electrolysis wasn’t enough. This is when I returned to school to get my Estheticians license. I would go to school in the morning and return in the afternoon to work and treat the regular clients I had. Each subsequent year, I would go back to school for more education to add services) micro-needling and the microblading). In essence, I was reinventing myself. I did have to move my office several times in order to find the right fit within the space I was renting. I am very happy where I am today and have a great rapport with the salon owner and the staff.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Serenity Skin Electrolysis & Skin Care – what should we know?
I specialize in Electrolysis hair removal. Electrolysis is the only FDA approved method of permanent hair removal. Unlike laser hair removal which is only effective on dark hair, I treat each individual hair follicle allowing me to treat all hair colors and skin tones. I wanted to set myself apart from the competition when it came to my service and equipment. Utilizing state of the art equipment The Apilus Platinum Pure from Dectro. The patented technology of the Apilus Platinum Pure machine uses 27MHz frequency to permanently and quickly destroy all types of hair. It works twice as fast as other epilators, destroying the cells essential for hair growth. The 27MHz is able to provide higher quality with a higher level of comfort. I use medical loupes, as well as an LED light allowing me to see more hairs than most, giving a more thorough and precise treatment.
I have a BFA from Syracuse University which allows me to use my artist background when it comes to Micro-blading. Micro-blading is the finest form of eyebrow artistry. I pride myself on giving my clients natural looking brows that no one knows are actually a form of tattooing. I am able to custom mix pigments for all my clients to go with their natural hair color and skin tone.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My instructors, as I was attending school were very knowledgeable and supportive when I was talking about opening my own business and were there to answer questions along the way.
I have a good friend from college, Jeannine Stark, who is an Electrologist in San Francisco, California. She has been a great mentor for me. We hash out ideas for marketing materials, and exchange tips late into the night.
Many of my clients have become friends as well. They tell me how much they appreciate my work and how it has made a difference in their lives. They share their stories with me,those of their children’s weddings, the births of grandchildren, and even the passing of loved ones.
And of course, my adult children have been there for me along the way. They listen to my excitement when I tell them about a class I’ve attended or a new product I’ve discovered.
