Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Kiedis.
Sarah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I got started doing calligraphy about four years ago when I saw lettering on pinterest and fell in love. I wanted to learn more about it so, I took some online classes. The more I practiced, the more I enjoyed it. I decided to start an Etsy shop with my envelope addressing, place cards and custom signs. I really enjoy working with brides and event planners making their guests feel special through my handwriting.
My business name is Lily Among Thistles. It was inspired by a verse in the Bible. I love the concept of being able to create something unique and handmade amongst the automated world we live in. Getting something handwritten is so meaningful. I love being able to spread joy through my work.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I love calligraphy, however, my biggest challenge is balancing being a wife and mom of 4 and a small business owner. While I cherish the role of wife and mother, I am grateful for the opportunity to have a creative outlet. Two and a half years ago my youngest son was born with a serious chronic heart condition. That put my business on hold for awhile. Although, it’s not all behind us, we are blessed that he is doing well. He is a sweet little blessing.
Also, shortly after his birth, we moved from Port Saint Lucie to Boca Raton for my husband’s job. I have been working at establishing new business connections here in Boca. It can be a challenge to create new connections but, I enjoy finding new clients and collaborating with new people.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is about creating remarkable first impressions. I specialize in weddings, helping create a personal touch by hand lettering the invitation envelopes, place cards and signs.
I also use my calligraphy for bar mitzvahs, birthday parties or any special event. I love talking with event planners and seeing their vision. My lettering on the envelope can set the tone for the special occasion as it is the guests first glimpse into what they can expect at the event.
One of my favorite parts of what I do is getting to see and hear the excitement when my clients and their guests receive my work in the mail. I especially enjoy getting to play a small part of my bride’s big day and see how my work adds to their event. It’s fun to see their story play out from sending out their invitations to seeing photos of the happy couple after the “I do”.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in South Florida with three adventurous brothers. My parents are both teachers and instilled in us a love of the outdoors. Growing up, I didn’t always have the best handwriting. My dad encouraged me to work hard at all things including my penmanship.
Even with all the boys around, my mom still made time for us to have ‘girl time’. She painted and quilted, seeing her joy in her work inspired me in my own. I have always loved to create and be crafty, I think that is a big part of what has drawn me to calligraphy.
