Meet Josefina Pieres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josefina Pieres.

Josefina Pieres

Hi Josefina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a film and theatre director based in Miami, from Buenos Aires. Grew up as an actress formed mainly in theatre and had my degree in Filmmaking at UBA (Universidad de Buenos Aires) Represented by Rebolucion and Quantico Films, I directed commercials for Mercado Libre, Epson, UHC, Garnier, Costa Peru, Changan, in between others.

I also directed interviews for Vanity Fair with Bad Bunny and for Meta with recognized music artists. My documentary film “Cuando la primavera se escapa, se libera del sueño” was in the Oficial Competition of BAFICI and won the Editing Prize. I directed “Madres” , the Argentinian version of “Motherhood. the Musical” in Buenos Aires which won Best Musical Theatre at Premios Estrella de Mar 2022.

I now live in Miami, where I am working both in theatre and film. Learning about the enormous possibilities that this city has. This is a growing city who is defining itself culturally. A year ago, I founded Simbios Art Corp with Micaplum, a non-profit company that works to develop theatre and film in South Florida.  We have been doing the theatre play “Así de simple” for over a year and a half, which I direct and has had a very powerful impact in the community. Also produced “Smiley”, which premiered a month ago, and now working on next year’s productions. We created Women in Theatre, where women from every company, actresses, producers, directors, teachers, writers, managers, get together to talk about the industry and build community.

I am a Professional Member of Free The Work and Women in Film & TV Florida.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been developing my artistic career since I was 11 years old, without knowing where it would take me. I truly believe that only trusting my guts, my instincts, and my passion, is what enabled me to achieve things I would have never imagined. Sometimes, our mind is our worst enemy.

Our mindsets are boundaries for ourselves. I always say, use your mind to study, to read, to learn, to know the world around you, and to acquire skills that distinguish you. Now, live life with your heart so that you get into adventures. My life is a rollercoaster and moving to this country, from Argentina, has been risky and challenging all together. My job is about team making, both in theatre and film, and it was a real struggle to get together teams with a similar vision in a new country.

Miami has many opportunities but you have to go find them. I had to do so much research to get to where I am today. It is not easy arriving in a new country, learning the new game rules. But once you get it, possibilities are infinite. Miami is giving me the opportunity to build a difference in the cultural community.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a storyteller, specializing in theatre and film. Being an actress has distinguished me as a director, because I speak the actor’s language and because I bring my heart into every job.

In film, I do mainly commercials and music videos. I am now writing my first feature film because I am determined to develop my career in fiction. Theatre is where my roots are and I could never stop doing theatre. That is why I founded Simbios Art Corp. Because I believe in building a powerful community in the arts. That is my mission.

What matters most to you?
To me, what matters most, is to create atmospheres of real and profound bonding. With my family, my friends, and with my working teams.

When that happens, transformation occurs and, in the end, we are here to become the best versions of ourselves and transform this world into a better one. As communicators, I always remind my actors in theatre that our responsibility is to be truthful to transform the audience.
