Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Suozzo.
Alexandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
If you told me when I was 18 years old, I would become an acupuncturist in a few years, I would’ve laughed. I moved to New York City fresh out of high school in hopes of following my dreams in the fashion world. I was accepted to FIT in Chelsea and had thought my dreams were coming true. Soon after though, I felt as if everyday I was living for someone else. I felt numb (not depressed) and, as if I had no purpose any longer. I didn’t know what the solution would be – to stay in NYC, change majors, professions, schools etc. I began to invest my time in my health trying to find a solution. I exercised more, ate healthier, removed toxins from my body but nothing was working – I still had that sense of numbness in my life. Growing up, I had always been healthy and luckily, had never needed to be hospitalized or on medication so all of this was new to me. I knew if I visited a doctor, I would immediately be prescribed anti-depressants and I knew that wasn’t my solution. My friend, who was Japanese told me to try acupuncture. After my first session, I felt like a new person and something within my soul had found home. THIS is what I had to do. I graduated from school in New York and came back to Florida where I was raised. I enrolled at the Atlantic Institute of Oriental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale. After graduation, I met a wonderful woman who was starting a new holistic anti-aging center and immediately hired me. That is how, Acupuncture By Alex was born!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life is ever smooth but I have always believed that overcoming struggles leads you to better destinations. For starters, just believing in yourself to begin a business is a struggle- you give up comfort for the fear of the unknown, constant doubt, less income, etc., but if you truly believe in yourself, the hard work is worth every “thank you” or healed client that leaves my office.
Acupuncture By Alex – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Acupuncture By Alex is dedicated to serving the community in its truest form. I believe in total and proper education for each individual in regards to one’s health. Acupuncture, which focuses on the body as a holistic system, has an unlimited amount of benefits from relieving pain, nausea, headaches, digestive issues, aiding in fertility and weight loss, helping balance hormones, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, etc. Acupuncture itself offers a personalized health care plan. The points I may use yesterday may not be applicable to your situation tomorrow. Just as our life changes day to day, so should our acupuncture treatments! In my practice, I also offer Cupping Therapy, which has been a popular trend in the news over the years with celebrities and athletes. Cupping acts as sort of an ‘inverted massage’ where the oxygen is removed by fire or using a pump to allow the skin to be suctioned. This, in turn, allows for toxins to be pulled out of the skin, rejuventation of new blood cells, also aiding in detoxification of organs and tissues, promoting blood circulation, and lymphatic drainage.
Gua Sha is another technique used similar to cupping. Gua Sha meaning ‘scraping sha-bruises’ uses certain tools to “release fascia.”
Herbal medicine is another main focus of my business. Herbs in their natural form are the basis for most prescription drugs, in which the compounds become synthesized in a lab, giving us a pill. Herbal medicine works just the same but with an added benefit of less side effects.
Acupoint Injection Therapy is a modality in my scope of practice where I can inject Vitamin B12 or Homeopathic remedies such as Traumeel for inflammation into acupuncture points. This treatment itself works wonders.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far, is seeing the beautiful and amazing results that acupuncture produces. Seeing people cry from joy after being told there are no options is the most amazing feeling you will ever receive. One particular moment I am proud of, is one of my clients was left with nerve damage in her foot after an incident. She went to Mayo Clinic and was told it would take a year to heal and it would get better over time. Over a year passed and it only seemed to get worse. She bought 4 treatments from me and after the FIRST, she had no more pain! Her nerves healed and she is back to being 100% again and that itself is a proud moment for me. I love to help people!
