Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Sutton.
Hi Elizabeth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My career started as a happy accident; I am a completely self-started artist. In 2015, my now ex-husband and I experienced severe financial loss. I was in the process of decorating my son’s nursery and began painting on a Sunday afternoon.
I put a photo of the results on Instagram and shortly after, somebody sent a DM saying they loved my work. They wondered if I could paint something for them. I said to myself, a little bit of time and money, why not?’ That is how my career started. It came after a series of traumatizing losses in my life and my art helped me heal.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Whatever is the opposite of smooth is what my life is. I have had my fair share of pain and loss for someone my age. My best friend got hit by a bus, we lost all of our money, my father-in-law passed away, I went through a miscarriage, I got a divorce with a 3-week-old, and my assistant was killed in a car accident in my car leaving my birthday party – all within 2 years time. I learned that everything in life happens for a reason and all my hardships were meant to teach me perspective and build resilience. Those experiences also gave me big, big dreams.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist and designer. I am known for my bold use of color, patterns, landscapes, butterflies, portraiture, and geometric abstractions. My fine art takes anywhere from 40 to 400 hours to paint. My goal is to create artworks that evoke feelings of happiness, inspiration, and nostalgia for my clients. I then translate my art into product design. I have a variety of collections including fashion accessories, tile, wallpaper, backpacks, little girl accessories, desk chairs, rugs, and tabletop. My designs have been sourced in some of the best restaurants and hotels in the world, and I am only just getting started.
I work with high-end hospitality venues such as Eden Rock, St Barths and One&Only Palmilla to create unique art programming and activations for their guests. I am still paving my path, and I realize it requires patience. This process cannot be rushed.
My children are my greatest inspiration, and my severe dedication to my career and my craft stems from my desire to both be a good role model for them, and to provide them with a life that is full of possibilities. To show them that with enough tenacity, resilience, and passion, that you can do and achieve anything. I am proud that I took my life into my own hands to get out of the depths of despair and to return to my happiness.
What sets me apart from others is my God-given talent combined with my severe work ethic. I learned that the things that come easy get taken away just as easily. As long as you don’t give up and keep working hard you will succeed. ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts’, said by the great Winston Churchhill, is a motto by which I live.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the street art scene and the magnificent nature of Miami. I struggle with the pace of getting things done in Miami. I am a New York hustler. I am used to doing things quickly and efficiently. Miami operates at its own pace, which I struggle with. Additionally, a lot of the business in Miami is done within the nightlife scene, and as a single mother of 2, that is not my lifestyle. I found it hard to penetrate the 305 clique that runs the robust and thriving hospitality world in Miami. Maybe in time.
