Today we’d like to introduce you to Keisha Gaines.
Keisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started with a cake decorating class at Michaels in 2010. I had just gotten married and had some extra time on my hands since I was no longer planning a wedding. I told my husband I was interested in the class and he convinced me that I should do it. While in the class I would post my cake projects on Facebook and as I showed progress my friends started asking me if they could buy one. That was when I realized that I might be able to sell them. After the classes ended I continued to experiment with different decorating techniques and recipes to get my skills up and created a business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This cake adventure has definitely not been a smooth road. There were some cakes that just didn’t work out and actually making a profit took a few years. There are so many tools and equipment that I needed so I would just reinvest any money made off of cakes back into the business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Keisha Cakes – what should we know?
My business is called Keisha Cakes and we specialize in custom crafted cakes and cupcakes. In other words, we make dope cakes! From wedding cakes to specialized 3/D cakes that can be made for any themed party. I’m most proud of our attention to detail. When someone orders a cake I always do extra research to make the cake is very special and my clients love that.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family and friends deserve the credit. I’ve had so many of them that has supported my dream over the years by placing orders, spreading the word about my business, advice, or even helping me on deliveries. Too many people to name but they all know who they are.
