Meet Marisa I. Hormel of Yello! Creative Arts and Events Center in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa I. Hormel.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Marisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I wanted to create a place to share my love for dance, art, and plant-based food with the community. Yello has been in operation now for three years, going on four, and expanded in 2016. The expansion has allowed us to host numerous events, exhibits, and workshops. Our new addition, Studio Z, is a performance venue with a state-of-the-art, plant-based kitchen. To share my personal journey with plant-based foods, I authored Bodies On Raw, an inspiring compilation of testimonials from individuals who made the switch to raw food, vegan, or plant-based choices. Their words take you on a journey through the power of food. I founded the Food for Health Foundation, with the mission to share the benefits of plant-based nutrition with people who are working to improve their own health, the health of family members, friends or those who intend to spread this message to a wider audience by providing funding for research and education. Additionally, the Food for Health Foundation provides scholarships for Cornell University’s eCornell T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate Program.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Originally at Yello, all classes were drop-in, meaning, a student could come by at any time. Though this method worked great for us, we saw the need for a more structure for our students to excel. Though we continue to have drop-ins for fitness classes, currently, we offer a nine-month commitment which allows each student to build technique which brings a greater sense of freedom in movement.

Please tell us about Yello! Creative Arts and Events Center.

Located conveniently on Commercial Boulevard, Yello! offers classes in ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, belly dance and ballroom. Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
This year alone, Yello has seen a significant increase in enrollment. We will continue to be a top dance studio for students looking to grow. We are putting ourselves on the map as a competitive dance studio, but also as a great place to participate in unique workshops including: vocal masterclasses, musical theatre workshops, dance intensives, vegan cooking classes, treat-making classes and more.

Pricing:

  • Yello’s pricing is based on how many classes each student chooses to take. In addition to our monthly contracts, Yello offers several drop-in fitness classes including Belly Dance and Zumba.
