Today we’d like to introduce you to Joan Wright-Good.
Joan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After finding out I was pregnant at age 17, I dropped out of high school. At that point, I thought my life was over and so did my family. It was the unfortunate event of rejection which led me to discover my endurance and grit. I decided to ‘prove’ people wrong. Proving that there is life after failure, life after being knocked down and life after being counted out.
After having my child, I went back to school, completed high school and college, earning 2 undergraduate degrees and one graduate degree. On my quest for knowledge, I developed a sense of independence and entrepreneurialism and soon found out that I was not your typical 9-5, yes sir/madam, clock in, 30 min lunch break, under-motivated kind of a chic.
I wanted to make a significant improvement and contribution to my community, I wanted to go beyond change and transform lives through what I do, I wanted to do what I do what God has gifted me to do on his time and not be bound by someone’s watch or clock, I wanted to be able to use all my talents and creativity all at once, instead of marching to the beat of someone’s else drum. I did not want society to dictate to me, what I could do, how to and when to and lastly, I wanted to teach my girls that girls don’t only carry babies, they are forces to be reckoned with in the marketplace. So, I became a boss!
I started my first business in my living room, I was the co-founder of a recording studio and talent management company. I managed the careers of several reggae artists and TV personalities. 2 years after I opened up a boutique catering to women and girls fashion. After dissolving the recording and talent management company, I sold the boutique in 2009. In 2012 I started Outsourcing Business Solutions which gave way to the current Business Start-up & Marketing. Our strongest products are our Business Startup programs and our Book Publishing. We also offer training at our online school, the boss Mogul Academy for people who would like to quit their jobs and start their business, those who would like to write their books and those who would like to start their motivational speaking career.
To this effect in 2016, we were recognized by the Whitehouse as Community Game Changers.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Certainly not! There were lots of bumps and bruises along the way, hits and misses, on the job training and more. The usual struggles were start-up capitals because I don’t believe in acquiring loans if it’s not a huge necessity. There were doubters and people who would secretly tell other not to support, and there were the projects that you undertake because you are familiar with someone or maybe friends that became your worst nightmares, ouch!
All in all, it has been a great journey, one that I would never trade, and one that I would do all over again, starting at a younger age.
