Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Orozco Cantillo.
Hi Monica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was an ICU/telemedicine nurse for 11 years and after watching so many people die due to lack of primary care, I decided to go back to school to get my Master’s degree in Nursing Family Practice. I worked for ~ two years in a local clinic, where I saw a need for primary care and hormone replacement in the aging population.
In 2020, Florida allowed Nurse Practitioners to become autonomous and this is when I decided to break away from the current healthcare system and provide quality care to local residents. Since I am a direct pay business model and do not bill healthcare insurance, I decided to keep costs affordable to clients via the means of telemedicine. I started my telemedicine clinic in 2021 managing primary care and HRT patients when COVID hit. I realized that many patients were being turned away by the local hospitals and people were desperate for care. I started treating Covid patients via telemedicine and then recruited a nurse to join me with home visits, where we treated patients aggressively to keep them alive. This work has been very emotional but rewarding and I fell back in love with medicine. I am able to treat clients the way medicine was meant to be, without time restraints or the assembly line mentality. I’m so happy to do what I do!!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not a smooth road. I really felt discouraged with the healthcare system the way it was established. I felt that the volume of patients with the very limited amount of time given to see them did not allow me to provide exceptional care to these individuals.
I also felt that patient care was not a priority, only the bottom line and that did not settle with me well.
