Meet Mark Wellington of Fit.Healthy.SIMPLE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Wellington.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am an exercise scientist and physical trainer. I grew up in England and moved to the US in 1995 on a tennis scholarship to university. Growing up, I always played sports and wanted to be a pro soccer player. I played at West Ham United (English Premier League Pro Club) for 3 years on their youth team. It was always soccer and tennis mainly. I spent six years at university for undergrad and grad school.

After finishing grad school, I worked at a sports academy for a couple of years At the academy I worked with many elites, pro athletes of all major sports (NBA, NFL, PGA, LPGA, MLB, MLS, ATP, WTA etc).

In 2003, I started to travel with some pro tennis players around the world to tournaments. I had good success with this, I have now worked with 4 players who have reached number 1 in the world rankings, many top ten players and grand slam champions and Olympic athletes. I was with Maria Sharapova when she won Wimbledon in 2004. I also traveled with Victoria Azarenka (world number 1), Madison Keys, Daniela Hantuchova, Genie Bouchard and many others.

Over the last 10 years or so, I have become increasingly interested in personal fitness and health training. I have had many friends, family and colleagues ask me to help them lose weight, gain muscle and reduce chronic aches and pains. I was amazed at the amount of junk information out there for regular people to get fit and healthy.

It is very simple if you follow the science behind human physiology. The main key is the right combination of fat burning and muscles toning exercises done at the right times for the right amount of time. On TV and in magazines, they are selling all sorts of crazy detox programs, weight loss machines, extreme diets and impossible to maintain workout programs. They are creating a fear and playing on our insecurities.

After traveling around the world for many years training pro athletes, I now want to help as many people as possible get the fitness and health of their dreams… to get the body and look they have always wanted and be able to maintain throughout their life. To be able to live more active lifestyles, play longer with their kids, enjoy vacations more, have more energy through the days and eliminate many of the chronic aches and pains that slow us down as we get a little older.

So from this, I have developed my Fit.Healthy.SIMPLE program. I don’t believe there is another program out there that is as effective and simple as mine. It will be cheaply available when it officially launches on Jan. Right now I am finishing up the new website and have my test clients finishing their first workout cycle. The simplest, most effective workouts, simple nutrition tips that allow you eat all that you enjoy and still reduce calories (eating out, family dinners, dinner parties etc. are an important part of life, everyone should be able to eat what they enjoy and still have the look and body that they want).

Basically, I have used my education in exercise science, experience with pro athletes and regular people, over 10 years of testing and fine-tuning the programs with friends and family etc. to develop this program. Not a second is wasted. I believe I offer the most effective, efficient and simple to follow workout and health program out there.

I continue to train and travel with pro athletes. But I wanted to offer this program as people are being misled with how simple general fitness, fat loss, muscle tone/gain can be. The fitness market plays on our insecurities to get us to buy gimmicks and fad programs without any chance of sustainable success. With Fit.Healthy.SIMPLE, you’ll not only lose fat, tone muscle and feel great, but you’ll learn how to simply sustain these results and enjoy it all as you go. I have almost finished my new website and getting all the content uploaded. The programs will all be custom designed by me to fit each person’s needs and want exactly.

I would like to talk about this Fit.Healthy.SIMPLE program and not so much about my work with pro tennis (www.KMGPerformance.com). The pro athlete training part of my career is amazing and I love it. But I want to help more than just 1-2 people at a time. Using my education and experience over the last 20 years, I believe this new program will be able to help thousands of people and give them a better quality of life with more confidence in how they look and feel.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have been a lot of struggles along the way. I have been self-employed in pro sports for 13 years now. It is a tough field to be in with lots of competition and jealousy. Breaking into the field and establishing myself with the athletes, their agents etc. was not easy and I think it takes a lot of self-confidence and ability in what you are doing. I just never wanted to work for anyone or have a regular office job :).

And for me to specialize in mainly tennis training later on in my career meant my market for clients was very small. I like to think that my success and length of career proves I have been able to develop elite training programs for some of the best pro athletes in the world over many years.

There is also a lot of pressure to perform well. If your clients are not performing well then it is their career, money etc. that they are losing. And a lot of the responsibility falls on the trainer and coaches. So I have had to be sure of what I am doing, build trust with my clients and of course, give them top level training programs that will really help at that level.

There is also the time away from home, some years I have spent 45 weeks a year on the road with clients. It is necessary at that level and you have to put your career and the athletes first in your life. It can be a thankless job at times. As I get a bit older, I’d like to be at home more.

I am now excited to add this new part of my career with Fit.Healthy.SIMPLE. I hope it can help a lot of people.

At Fit.Healthy.SIMPLE, we now offer what I think is the simplest, most fun and most effective way for anyone to get in the best shape of their life. To drop fat, tone and/or build muscle and reduce/eliminate many chronic aches and pains. To eat what you enjoy. To be able to fit it into any schedule and lifestyle. I think life is everything that happens while we are not working out. So do it efficiently and simply and get out there and live your life.

I am known in the pro athlete world as one of the fittest trainers. I am 42 and still train alongside my clients most of the time.

I am also known for my success with female, pro tennis players. I have trained 4 world number ones, several other top 10 ranked players. I have helped my players win Grand Slam championships, Olympic medals, and Davis/Fed Cup events.

I am also known for a no bull shit approach to what I do. It has cost me, clients, sometimes, but I won’t do anything I don’t think is right for my athletes. Sometimes the athlete’s agent, father, coach etc disagree and I end up getting fired. But I have a lot of education and experience in what I can do as fitness and physical trainer and I won’t compromise that for anyone.

I hope now, this same mentality will allow regular people to achieve results in their health and fitness they haven’t been able to get before. There are no gimmicks, no shortcuts, just effective and efficient programs based on the science of the human body.

I think I am most proud of starting this new Fit.Healthy.SIMPLE adventure now. I have worked for myself for many years now and battled with pro athletes to establish my career. It is easy now to carry on with this and ride it out for another 10 years or so. But for the last 5 years or so I have wanted to develop my own training programs that can help many more people and change some people’s lives. It has been over a year now of development in my new venture and I still am not quite ready to launch. I am proud of myself for really taking the time now to do it and put it out there…succeed or fail, it is a worthy venture.

I think what sets me apart from other fitness programs now is that I give nothing but the simple details of how the regular person can get in amazing shape and feel great. I don’t need to make money, I have my career in pro sports that is doing great. I just want to put this out there as I think it can help many people. I have no reason to sell anything that is not pure fitness and health based, proven by science and as simple as possible. I am just a bit tired of seeing all the gimmick products and programs that TV and media try to trick us and guilt us into buying with fake promises and impossible to achieve results.

I want to show people just how simple general fitness, health, and an active life can be.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Boca Raton. I live close to the ocean and am there pretty much every day that I am home. I can’t live without the beach, ocean, and sunshine. I love the downtown area around Mizner Park, it has grown a bit over the last few years. There are more restaurants, bars, and social activities now. It is an amazing small town with a great mix of people of all ages. It’s friendly and active, has a great mix.

Boca is also peaceful generally, not too busy and never a real lot of traffic and congestion.

Not sure if there is anything that I don’t like, it has everything for me.
