Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Barbara Winter.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Winter. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
If you knew me growing up, you would never have thought that I would be sitting in the place I am in. I was not the kid to whom everyone came to talk about their problems nor was I the one voted to be ‘best mother’ or even ‘married with family’. Somewhere along the line, those changed.
I was raised on the south shore of Long Island in a traditional intact family in a neighborhood where moving forward was expected. During the year between college and graduate school I turned down an offer for carte blanch training at a still major bank; it was not where my heart wanted to be.
So I migrated to Florida for graduate school and never left (except for a year in Cleveland to do my training at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. It was here I started my practice just 30 years ago; it was also here I had my precious boys, now 22 and 19. And it is here I stay with both going strong!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting my practice was a natural progression and intuitive for me. And with a marketing background as a college minor, I had a good start. During the first 10 or so years, my practice focus was ‘women’s issues’-eating disorders, depression, anxiety, abuse etc. I was known for working with women. It was a prosperous and satisfying practice, but, when my son was born it opened up new avenues I didn’t see coming. In fact, being a mother had the single biggest impact on my work and passion as a psychologist. 22 years ago, and with sexology training just complete, I morphed my practice into helping those with sexual issues and struggles. I believed and still believe, in fact, that each and every mental health practitioner should have training in sexuality. I believe you cannot treat the person without, at best, being comfortable with and understanding sexuality. Rapidly my work shifted to including men and couples and from there I have continued my work as a ‘sex and relationship expert’. Today it is my goal to help individuals and couples, in the most expedient way possible, walk through their pain and challenges to forming their best selves and create the relationships they love!
We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
As a child I was quiet and rather shy yet internally tenacious; when I wanted something I worked to get it.
From the time I played ‘miss tush’ a nurse in a 3rd grade school play I decided I wanted to be a doctor.
Always a hard worker it was a question of whether I would proceed to become a physician or an architect. Taking a turn, I landed in psychology and with the dream of becoming ‘Anna Freud’, I landed in private practice.
As I experienced graduate school, I developed a growing passion to help others transcend through their challenge and transform their lives. I do believe we can change our life in a minute if we so choose.
