Today we’d like to introduce you to Lawren Leo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story, which is the story of New Moon Books, began with a wish: I want to replace things that feel wrong. So, creativity and inspiration gave birth to tolerance, love, joy, happiness, and meaningful purpose. And I removed racism, hatred, bigotry, and discrimination whenever and wherever I could. This came from my soul. But it all came about spontaneously. I can’t take credit for mapping this all out. I just tried to make sure things aligned, in the end, with my own thinking.
Very early in my life, I began running from what I knew was always going to be my true calling. Like a counterproductive quest. It was all about evasion. Everything I tried left me unfulfilled. It held no purpose for me. When I finally took a good look at my life, at the world in general, I was heartbroken. There was so much sadness. I decided to leave corporate America and realized that my ‘grail’ was and always will be my psychic/intuitive side and writing skills. I delved into it, studied it, followed where it led me, and finally learned to love it. I never did want to live what would be considered a traditional life. And I’m definitely not, lol. And the timing is so critical now. I’m not a pessimist, but come on – we’re all in a really bad place right now. We need a shelter from the storm, so to speak.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
By far the largest obstacle has been a stigma. Owning a ‘New Age’, ‘spiritual’, or ‘witch’ store left me massively vulnerable to negativity. I’ve heard and overheard more than my fair share of it. He’s a witch, so he can’t be a good person. He’s not religious, so he’s evil. The Bible says, “Beware the soothsayer.” He’s successful because he sold his soul to the devil. Oh, that’s one of those stores where they sell fairies and stuff.
And then people started coming into my store. And their first words after seeing the Pompano sun casting rainbows from the crystals on the light blue walls, and looking up at the bouquets of dried flowers hanging from the ceiling were, “It’s so peaceful in here.” To remove stigma, I’ve posted these words on New Moon Book’s Facebook page: Don’t let differences divide us. Accept uniqueness. Let’s celebrate at one table.
Please tell us about New Moon Books.
I am a psychic above all. I counsel people spiritually, in person or by phone; live or by email. I have done this before New Moon Books existed. My business is an outgrowth of this gift. Educating people was my top priority when I first opened and that has not changed. There’s no real difference between being religious and being just and having good morals. Is there? I don’t think we ever stop needing a teacher. I surround myself with objects that can teach – both others, and me! – books, crystals, candles. And good teachers don’t dictate, they stimulate. And the best teachers never ask us easy questions. So, if you listen, you might hear: “Why don’t you think about the mystery of existence?” or “What is the meaning of death?”
“If I can be a beacon of hope, then people will find me.” That’s what I held in my heart while I watched the sign for New Moon Books, Crystals & Candles go up at my new location in Pompano Beach. And I had a less lofty thought, a plea to the universe, “Publish my book – and fast!” Now, nearly nine years later, you can hold the book that was in my heart – and some other works – in your hand, and New Moon Books is running strong.
My store is a collection of the tools necessary to lead a spiritual life. But, you may see this from multiple points of view. If you want something to appeal to your inner artist, please visit! Dried flowers, hundreds of essential oils, resins, incense, and sage – or if you walk in looking for crystals, I have an incredible range of high-grade, fairly-priced tumbled crystals and specimens. My books can pique the curiosity of any layperson, in the realm of candle-making, magic in the Middle Ages, or the origins of the Enochian language used in Angel Magick. Or you can come expressly to get spell books or all things to create the functional Wiccan or Spiritual altar. I like to call my store a ‘shelter from the storm’. My store, my publications, and the readings I give help people achieve simple goals – even if it’s just momentary relief from stress. But this, I know, can lead to something profound, something they can cling to – a sense of Purpose, an Awakening.
Crystals, Nature’s art, come from the earth, yet are unearthly. They soothe and energize. They’re filled with mystery and have healing properties. And books. Well, knowledge is power. It’s much more enjoyable to visit a bookstore than choosing one online. You’ve got to read the table of contents, feel the quality of the paper, and should have the ability to talk to a person who already read it. There’s power in that exchange. Finally, candles. They comprise all energy work: philosophy, spirituality, mysticism, occultism, yoga, meditation.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is receiving a lucky amulet from my grandmother. I believe life is full of luck! On many occasions, I’ve been the right person in the right place at the right time. Old-fashioned discernment, however, is my most important compass; wisdom is, after all, a byproduct of elbow grease. As is learning to listen to others.
But I do have a gift. At the most important moments in my life, there’s an internal voice that tells me what to do. I receive guidance psychically in another way. I see paths that would otherwise have remained hidden. They are magical, creative paths.
That is what led me to open New Moon Books and to continue writing. I wish it for everyone.
