Daily Inspiration: Meet Synae Campbell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Synae Campbell.

Hi Synae, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I remember a time where my self-confidence was at an all time low. Even with makeup, I still didn’t feel that I was pretty. I knew that that was not okay at all. Gaining self-confidence has always been a trial for me, and some days it still is, but I knew the first step was loving me in my purity. The natural me was what I wanted to consider the best me. I decided I wanted to take better care of me, even if that meant just taking time out of my day to love on my skin and use better quality products. If you know me, you know I’m quick to try a natural DIY. So I began my journey to “smooth and radiant” skin. I started skin care products at home for myself and friends and family. I enjoyed knowing what was in my products and not using any harsh chemicals, parabens or ingredients that were overall harmful for our skin and bodies. I always received compliments on my skin and I only used products I created.

I always knew I didn’t want to work for any one and I truly enjoyed making skin care so I considered turning my craft into a business. During my final year in college, I found out I was pregnant.

Honestly, I panicked and started pushing my ideas of starting Smoov Skin Naturals back. I felt rushed and like I needed money quickly and did not think starting my business was a good idea. Shortly after having the baby, I realized if anytime was a good time to start Smoov Skin, it was now. I really enjoyed staying home with my baby and watching him grow. I knew if I worked a day job, things would be a lot different. So I began brainstorming, and business planning and tweaking formulas. Coincidently, I was given a long planning period due to the COVID quarantine. It was a very stressful time but I was more motivated than ever and had lots of time to plan. I created Smoov Skin with the importance of self-love, self-care and self-empowerment in mind.

Once I understood the value of those principles, I knew I deserved the best in every way possible, including my skin. I am firm believer in “When you look good, you feel good.” and “What you put in, is what comes out.” So I created quality products for my skin, with ingredients I could pronounce! I felt good! And I wanted everyone else to feel the same! Smoov Skin has been launched for two months now and it’s one of the things I’m proud of! It feels great doing something I love, and seeing other women gain new found confidence in their bare skin.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It is a blessed road, but it was not the smoothest. Smoov Skin’s launch date got pushed back further and further. In the end, it worked out best but it was very discouraging. I was having trouble finding packaging, companies were afraid to ship because of the pandemic, and I was unable to play with formulas because the packages took months to come in. I wasn’t able to have the launch party I planned due to COVID restrictions. This was scary for me because it was a big part of our launch marketing. Aside from external factors, some of the struggles were internal. I sometimes felt unqualified for the job or afraid of failure when I made risky decisions. But just as we overcame the launch struggles, I overcame the self-doubt. I now speak daily affirmations over my business, and it really keeps my positive thoughts lifted.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Smoov Skin Naturals is one of the things I’m most proud of in my life, but it doesn’t beat the other thing that keeps my hands full. I also stay at home with my one year old son, Khaizi. I work very hard to make my big visions for both of them come to past. What sets me apart from others is that I did not create Smoov Skin with intentions of only income. I wanted to create Smoov Skin for my people. We need more things of our own and we deserve it in the best quality. Smoov Skin was designed with the idea of having better for myself in all aspects. I wanted better skin care products, better financial situations, better self-care, even if it was just devoting personal time to my skin routine. I also wanted my son to see that he is more than capable of overcoming any limitations and disadvantages that are systematically preset for our people. I want to be the first successful entrepreneurs in my family and really set the ball in motion for our future generations.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory had to be big sleepovers with all ten of my cousins at my Nana’s house. It’s one of the purest memories of the times where my family felt “together”. These random sleepovers were ones we always convinced our parents to say yes on. Even when they warned us, we were going home. We were young, and so innocent and everything felt right. We played games, we argued like brother and sister, we laughed with each other. On Sunday morning’s my Papa would wake us up early for the beach and cook the same meal every time: pancakes, beef sausage, scrambled eggs and fried dumplings. This memory may seem so small, but I think about these times often and it makes my heart so warm. My family was complete then. No one had died, no one had grown apart and everything was whole.
