Meet Andrea Ferro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Ferro.

Hi Andrea, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hola! My name is Andrea Ferro and I am a bilingual Actress/Singer born and raised in Miami, FL. Both my parents are from Caracas, Venezuela and moved my family to the US in the 1990’s, which made me a first generation American.

For as long as I can remember, my childhood consisted of going to work with my dad, who at the time was a Theater producer. However, I didn’t know how deep my love for the stage was until I began performing at the age of 13 where I made my debut at the Area Stage Conservatory. During my 4 years with the company, I did 9 musicals. Some credits include, Little Women (Jo March), Les Miserables (Eponine), Into The Woods (The Witch) and my professional debut in The Dreams of Anne Frank (Anne Frank).

At the age of 17, I moved to New York City to continue training at the Atlantic Acting School Professional conservatory. While I was there, I studied & performed classical text such as Shakespeare and Chekhov as well as the contemporary playwrights. After graduating from the program, I was offered the role of Trini in the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Nilo Cruz’s play Baño De Luna (Arca Images). This show was also my debut in a Spanish speaking production. Following that, I continued to work with Nilo by performing his monologue Farhad Or The Secret Of Being (Farhad). This production was a 45 min monologue with four songs incorporated into the text. It was an incredible opportunity that I later went on to reprise the role three more times.

With the experience I had under my belt, I went back to NYC to become a Teaching Artist with the Atlantic Acting School. I taught the youth arts program as well as Staging Success. This particular program was an in-school arts education residency that used theater and spoken word poetry to help students uncover their voices. Subsequently, I did an Off Broadway musical, Last Stop On Market Street (Atlantic Theater Co.) Then I worked with Columbia University’s Lenfest Center For The Arts where I performed in Charles Mee’s Big Love (Lydia) as the title role.

Now I’m happy to say I am back where it all began in Miami performing in the musical Cuba Under The Stars currently running through March 28th!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Whenever I’m going through something difficult, my mom’s words always come to mind, “Un dia a la vez.” This means, One day at a time. Whatever challenges I was facing, I was reminded to take a deep breath and know that tomorrow is a new day.

Moving to NYC at such a young age and not attending a traditional university was a scary thought at first. But once arriving and finding my “tribe” in the conservatory, I felt like I could do anything. I lived in NYC for five years and never once did I stop hustling. There were times when I had to juggle five jobs in every borough just to make ends meet. Despite the obstacles, I was always pushing myself closer to my goal.

What I realized were that those tough experiences I had encountered, made me who I am today and have helped prepare me for what’s to come. I truly believe everything happens for a reason and opportunities can happen even when you least expect them.

When things get tough, there are 3 words that I repeat continuously, I call them the 3 P’s, Passion, Patience and Perseverance. Reminding myself of this, helps me know that as long as I’m following my passion, hardships are welcomed because they will always be a part of the journey.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a proud Latinx actress/singer and want to continue exploring my heritage through art.

Currently I am working on a musical in Miami called Cuba Under The Stars. The production is a dinner theater show that follows a beautiful love story told through Cuba nostalgia. We opened our doors December of 2020 following all the CDC guidelines and have been running since!

The show presents a live orchestra composed of 18 musicians, 20 dancers, 3 actors (counting myself), and some of the best cuban singers including Amaury Gutierrez, Luis Bofill, Gretel Ortiz, and Albita Rodriguez. Come join us for a magical night of pure entertainment!

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
As a little girl, I had an obsession with shark week and would watch every July countless hours of the content they had to offer. I would be glued to the TV, in awe of the majestic Great Whites they’d show feeding off of seal island.

Fast forward to my 18th birthday, I was surprised with a trip to South Africa. Little did I know, the surprises didn’t end there. My father told me we were going on a road trip from Cape Town to Gansbaai. When we arrived in the town I saw a big sign that said “Great White Cage Diving.” I felt so many emotions at once! Excitement, shock, and definitely a little bit of fear. We got on the boat and were taken past Seal Island to see all the seals and then, all of a sudden massive great whites appeared, 16ft-18ft female sharks circling the boat. Finally it came time to put on the wet suits and go in the water. Being in the cage, submerged under water and seeing them up close was like nothing I had ever faced before. To this day, it’s still one of the most thrilling experiences of my life!
