Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadine Jean
Hi Nadine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was first introduced to Sisterlocks in the late 90’s and found it interesting, it took me almost 10 years to take the plunge and transition into the natural hair journey with Sisterlocks. I had my locs installed in 2008 and shortly after decided to take the Sisterlocks class. I completed my class in august 2008 and at the time was content just understanding and knowing the process but I was not interested in making it a business. In late December my daughter was born as a micro preemie and I found myself home for the next 3 years. Unemployed, taking care of an autistic child with lots of doctor follow ups, I slowly build a clientele from word of mouth, never advertised as I was trying to keep a small list of clients. Over the years, I realized that Sisterlocks and interlocking was not simply a hairstyle but instead for those women who wanted, it was a way of achieving complete freedom from relaxers and constant hair processing. I saw my clients achieve hair lengths they only dreamed of. The best example of freedom was being able to vacation, take a swim and not have to worry about hair. It realized I was able to help black women define beauty outside the norms of society!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a smooth ride until COVID-19. Pre pandemic, I was able to control my clientele with a home base business. Since COVID, we have all had to adjust, I had to take the business outside of my house and find creative ways of supporting my customers. Keeping my health and the health of my clients as a priority, constants cleaning and disinfecting! This is a one women show so I do it all!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I install and maintain Sisterlocks and interlocking of hair. I am most known for my speed and punctuality. I use to hate spending the bulk of my Saturday in a hair salon. So when I started my business it was important that my clients knew they would be seen on time and while they are in my chair, my entire focus is on them. I may have to take less clients in a day but my clients know, we start on time and finish in a reasonable amount of time. I am reliable and focused on one customer at a time!
