Meet Daynia Rowe of SlayedByD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daynia Rowe.

Hi Daynia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ever since I was a little girl, I always loved braiding and doing hair. My mom used to do my hair and soon after taught me how to do plaits. A couple of years later, when I was around ten years old, my mom started to have shoulder pain, from there, I started doing my own hair. Over the years, I would try different styles on myself and would get many compliments. At the beginning of 2019, when I was 15 years old, I did my best friend’s hair and she encouraged me to make an Instagram page to show people my work and to possibly take it more seriously. The very next day I made my Instagram page and many of my friends showed their support by reposting and following me.

When I started off, I would do probably 4-5 heads per month. I knew my work wasn’t perfect and wasn’t the best at the time but months and months of practice would soon pay off. I started promoting my page and building a following until I got to a place where I was happy with what I was doing. I made a booking site so that my page would be more professional and used polls on my Instagram story to get more interactions from my followers. In September of 2020, I launched my very collection called the SlayedByD Collection. The collection includes my very own custom bonnets, durags, edge wraps, and edge brushes. And in November of 2020, I did my very first hair shoot where I highlighted some of my best and most popular styles.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely not smooth sailing. In the beginning, it was hard to build a fan base and get clients. There was a bit of interaction on my Instagram page but it was hard to turn that into increasing clientele. I used polls and asked questions on my Instagram story to build up follower interactions. When I was finally able to turn the interactions into new clients, I ran into a new problem. It was becoming hard to expand my brand. I didn’t just want to do hair, I wanted to add hair accessories and actually make a brand. It took me months to brainstorm, find vendors, raise the money and even build up the courage to reinvest into my business. When I finally did I took all of the money I saved and ordered my first batch of inventory. From there, it was just a matter of promoting and launching them at the right time.

We’ve been impressed with SlayedByD, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well, my name is Daynia Rowe and SlayedByD is the name of my brand. I am a 17-year-old hairstylist located in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I specialize in braided hairstyles such as plaits, tribal braids, feed-in braids, etc. I think what sets me apart from others is that I don’t really look at it as a job more so because it’s something that I look forward to do every day. I look forward to seeing the different styles that I can create and making a vision come to life. Brand wise, I am most proud of my collection. The SlayedByD Collection includes bonnets, durags, edge wraps, and edge brushes in various colors. I am most proud of this because to start of just doing hair for fun to making a brand and seeing your name and logo on something you created, it’s just exciting. I want all the readers to know that it wasn’t an easy journey but it was definitely worth it and I will continue to pursue my passion.
