Today we’d like to introduce you to Emilio Dominguez.
Emilio, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I began my journey as an entrepreneur at 11 years old with a dog-walking business in my neighborhood. It wasn’t an earth-shattering concept, I just knew I wanted to work for myself eventually and seek opportunities.
At 18, I joined the Air Force and served for six years in multiple countries and continents. During this time, I also attended Quinnipiac University for International Business and Finance. By 22 years old, I had started three micro-businesses. Each one taught me many lessons through both mistakes and victories, and I continue to learn every day.
My most recent venture is a cafe that my wife, Jimena, and I acquired just over a year ago. The founder created much of the existing beautiful space that attracts people through the doors every day; what we chose to purchase was the opportunity to evolve the business. We have more than 9x’d the company in one year through a dedicated approach of authentic hospitality, shopping fresh every day, listening to our guests, and appreciating all who have helped and continue to help us.
Has it been a smooth road?
Running and growing a small business while having a young family is never easy – but the COVID pandemic really concerned us in terms of the business. We shut down for almost two months to keep our young daughters as protected as possible while we still didn’t know so much. Thankfully since reopening, our guests proved to us how loyal they are and have made our most recent months our best ever.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Modern Rose – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
The Modern Rose is a unique cafe offering options for breakfast, lunch, brunch, sweets, a locally-roasted coffee program, and a tea portfolio of over 50 different organic teas. We specialize in three things: (1) hospitality, (2) creativity, and (3) creating memorable experiences. We’re most well-known locally for our Mexican street corn style Avocado Toast, our Modern Egg Sandwich (frequently commented as the best breakfast sandwich our guests have ever had), the sweet and unique Peach & Love flatbread, our Cinnamon Mocha Latte and the Dragon Tea. I’m most proud of the company’s ability to build and foster communities, to “wow” our guests, and help people leave with the feeling that they can’t wait to come back.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about our city is definitely the diversity! What I like least about our city is the lack of mountainous land to hike and explore trails, etc.
