Today we’d like to introduce you to Broadway Louie.
Broadway, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in Paterson, NJ, I grew up in a poverty-stricken environment. Fatherless and a mother who worked constantly to try her best to provide the basic necessities for me. I ended up getting into different things and she moved me to N.C. for a better and more disciplined upbringing. From there, I did some time in the military and went on multiple deployments to places such as Africa, South America, Europe and others, when my time was completed I decided to pursue acting and music. I’ve gone thru a lot of hardship such as being homeless, losing loved ones on a consistent basis and etc. Continued to fight the demons and finally broke thru to where I can actually be happy about things I’ve achieved and who I’ve grown to be as well as my brand growing with me. There’s a lot more to the story but that’s a short summary.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it hasn’t at all. When pressing towards success, I don’t think the path is easy for anyone outside of the privileged. I grew up in surroundings where violence and negative influences are behind every corner you turn. Add that on to the fact the things I’ve seen most people have only witnessed in a sitcom or in theatre, I was homeless as recent as two years ago, lost my sister to cancer, best friend drowned attempting to save his son, I went thru suicidal attempts due to allergic reactions to the meds the doctors prescribed…the list goes on. Lol. But I learned the struggles you face can be the same blessings that show you your worth.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m an artist/actor/songwriter, I write music for film, TV, Youtubers and have been consistently growing my brand exposure at a steady pace. I specialize in hip-hop/rap but I also write poems and R&B for myself and other artists. I recently released a new EP “On Gawd” that is doing extremely well and I released my debut project “Growth” last year which highlighted my struggles with mental health, dealing with dishonest people and other traumas I experienced and overcame. I’ve appeared in two independent full-length films: Soulhood and Soulhood: Prime in which we sold out theatres in Jacksonville and Orlando. We filmed parts of Soulhood in Miami actually. Soulhood: Prime recently won awards and was nominated for a few film festivals that we will be attending in 2021 due to Covid. I also have a Youtube series named “L.Y.F.E.” that premieres on October 11, 2020 which is about these college students going to different learning experiences and how they respond to them. I’m most proud of the fact I made it thru everything I experienced and I’m here to speak on them today to help others heal or find motivation thru me. I believe who I am and what I stand for sets me apart from others, a lot of artists make moves based off the benefits that can be provided to them or the money they can make, which is definitely a motive however principle and legacy are a big part of why I do what I do. If you don’t have morals in the decisions you make, you will feel empty in the end.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was the smart kid trying to fit in, due to the fact we were poor I often had to defend myself and “prove” myself of being worthy. Lol. Never had what the other kids had so I went out and got it or I used my personality to overshadow what I didn’t have. I did talent shows where I was perform my favorite songs and also did modeling here and there. I wrote a lot of poems but 9 times out of 10, you would either find me playing basketball, taking computers apart of running around with my cousins trying to find something to get into. I was the kid who would always make something out of nothing because it was fun. I loved to make people laugh and to impersonations of my favorite actors and scenes. As well as draw, I drew a lot of cartoon characters and would give them away as gifts. Also collected basketball and football cards as well as comic books.
