Today we’d like to introduce you to Tia Coleman.
Tia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a Big dreamer with an even bigger imagination! Growing up, my dad would always tell me, “You were meant to be your own boss.” When I express my frustrations about my 9-5, my peers reassure me that “I won’t be working for anyone else much longer, that my gifts are making room for me.” The Sweetest Sisters was created and inspired by my two daughters, Mackenzie (4) and Makayla (1), to teach them responsibility and independence in their own safe space. In my mind, it’s like who better than me to create the opportunity for my children to be their own boss. I want to give them the headstart in life that so many brown children wish they had. My goal is to expose them to entrepreneurship at an early age so they can see that working for corporate America isn’t the only way to build wealth.
Entrepreneurship is my blood, but as far as the birth of the sweetest sisters. My granddad had an old food trailer sitting in his driveway for years untouched, one day I asked him could I start a business with it, I explained my vision and the rest is history. That same day I made a few phone calls and landed my first paid event with a local middle school; it just so happened to be a three day Jacksonville Jaguars football camp where I made over $1000 and connected with staff to build a working relationship with them; I was on a high. For me, it wasn’t about the money; it was about the smiles on all the kid’s faces. I felt so fulfilled and I knew this business was for me.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Has the road been smooth? Absolutely not! But I believe its gold at the end of every rainbow. If 2020 hasn’t taught me anything else, it has taught me to “Trust Gods Timing.” To be completely transparent, aside from the typical business hiccups, my biggest obstacle as an entrepreneur has been ME being in my own way, I would doubt myself, and I would sit on ideas waiting on the perfecting time when the perfect time is the present time! When I stopped letting people project their fears on to me about what I should and shouldn’t do or what I should wait to do, I flourished.
Please tell us about The Sweetest Sisters.
The Sweetest Sisters is a gourmet shaved ice experience ran by me and my uncle Adam Fluker; it’s a family affair so it’s a healthy and positive work environment, which means a lot to me. We connect families across Florida and GA through the enjoyment of sweets and celebrations. We are mobile, fun and we can cater to any event. It’s my personal brand that embodies everything me and children stand for and love. We are a creative trio so we’re literally just having fun while building wealth.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could have done anything over differently, it would have been to start sooner.
