Meet Kiyunii Kendrick of Closureperfection in Miami Gardens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiyunii Kendrick.

Kiyunii, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
How I started was very unexpected. I went to Nova Southeastern University as a freshman at the age of 17. I graduated at 21 with a bachelor’s in criminal justice and a minor in Psychology. At the age of 23, I started my career as a full-time Case Manager for DCF. I later picked up a part-time teaching job at my former high school Monsignor Edward Pace High school, while being a case manager. I have always kept myself up and I always was a pro at styling my own wigs. I was up one night really late and I had this idea of getting into the hair industry but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do since the hair industry was already so over-saturated.

I came across a few Korean guys we agreed to train me on full lace wig making and the correct term for it is Ventilation. I trained for about three months and after I actually finished my class, I started to all of a sudden get really slack with my 9-5 because I grew to love what I learned how to do that I thought would just be a hobby a side thing. At 24, I decided to walk out on faith and expose my hidden talent to the world. This was a big deal for me and I was under a lot of pressure because I never thought I would use my college degree for just two years and my biggest fear was “what if Closureperfection don’t work.”

Has it been a smooth road?
I honestly don’t think I have had any struggles along the way with Closureperfection. If anything, I would say it was a bit challenging for me when it came to me trying to get into certain classes for training due to a lot of trainings being out of the country or overseas most of my classes were via Skype so that made classes hard and longer. Another thing I would say was a challenge was me finding a good vendor for quality supplies for lace making.

We’d love to hear more about Closureperfection.
I am a theater wig designer I have theatrical practice in wig making. I make full lace wigs, Frontals and Closure pieces from scratch. I am known just for that ability by itself because that is how I entered the hair industry. What I am most proud of as a company is me being able to keep up in the industry and staying ahead of the industry at the same time. What sets me apart from others is me being able to create the most realistic lace application without the help of a stocking cap, make-up on the lace or baby hairs. The majority of the hairstylist in the industry use the listed things to achieve a natural install and I don’t need any of it, which keeps me in my own lane.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see myself becoming a full-time educator for the lace industry in the next five years. I will be touring the world to give away all my lace secrets and techniques. My goal for teaching will be making sure all the new hairstylists are built based of self technique for the lace industry and not trend Techniques of the industry.
