Meet Keva Johnson of Keva J Swimwear in Pembroke Pines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keva Johnson.

Keva, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved fashion! I knew I wanted to do something in that industry! In college, I wanted to design clothes for Barbie! In my junior year, I landed an internship with Baby Phat (my favorite company back then)! After leaving that internship, I decided I wanted to have my own line and not work under a designer. I graduated from Florida State University with me degree in Apparel Design!

I was going on a cruise for one year with my girlfriends and I was looking for swimwear! I couldn’t find anything! Everything looked the same! I like to stand out and be unique. This inspired me to design swimsuits. I made three suits and did a photoshoot and put the pics up on MySpace! The reaction was great and I later moved to NY in 2007! And as they would say… the rest is history!

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road! I remember thinking I was going to move to NY and have lunch with all these celebs! And then reality hit lol! Being in NY really helps to mold you into who you want to be in this industry! It helps you to develop a thick skin! I remember shopping my suits around to different boutiques and hearing, “Oh No! These Are Too Crazy”! Not For Our Boutique! I had a lot of cut out monokinis! It was hard to get my foot in the door with buyers! I had to learn to find that common ground! Keeping my design asthetic, yet learning to design for the everyday woman and not just one person in mind! I didn’t know anybody in the industry so I literally had to meet people and open these doors for myself!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Keva J Swimwear – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
So we are a Swimwear Company and we specialize in unique styles for the modern-day fashionista! We are known for our unique cuts and our flattering fit! I always want to make sure the suit fits in all the right places and accentuates the right part of a woman’s body!

I think what sets us apart is we have suits for every size! Suits that look good and support everybody’s size! A lot of our customers tell us they have such a hard time finding nice swimwear that supports a bigger bust! If it does support, it’s not that stylish! So we have bridged that gap! We offer stylish suits that provide support and comfort!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the sunshine and the beaches! I love our creatives here!

I don’t like the humidity and I wish we had more of a “fashion district.” In terms of fabric and trim stores! We are limited here!
