Today we’d like to introduce you to Ricquan Roberts.
Ricquan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Immigrated to New York when I was two, lived there for nine years. I moved to Georgia in fourth grade, then moved to Florida in ninth grade. The majority of my life, I thought I was going to be an athlete, dreaming to becoming a basketball player at the University of North Carolina. I was planning to study marine biology. I realized that if I played basketball my whole life, I will soon become miserable. I always had interest in creating music in the rap genre. Growing up, I was known as an exceptional writer and music always intrigued me.
In tenth grade, I met one of my best friends, Wooly. We used to listen to Joey BadA$$, pro era, TDE, A$AP, and the whole east coast movement. I created my first song on an Acer laptop and on a Rock Band microphone while using the software ‘Audacity.’ I started showing my friends my music, which led me to release music on Soundcloud. What kept me motivating is when my friends would play my music at house parties, the crowd would be moved by my music. Then, when I arrived in college, I joined a fraternity. My music spread throughout Florida and that helped me get to where I am today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For a long time, I did not have my own equipment. So it was hard for me to make music consistently. Then when I did finally get my equipment, it was hard for me to decide which song to record. I am currently trying to find myself as an artist and not try to bite off anyone else by finding a unique sound.
I always try not to care what people think because when you mention to someone that you are an aspiring artist, people look at you funny. They just are not aware that their favorite artist was once in a similar position as me.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
What I do is me, what sets me apart from others is that I have a unique voice. Also, I make my music solely off of personal experiences. I do not care about what is cool or what the trend is. I just think to myself and do my own thing.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Attempting to get out of Florida soon, increase my audience, release more content, and take everything day by day because it will not happen overnight.
