Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberta Barros.
Roberta, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Roberta Barros. I’m a Brazilian Industrial Designer with a background in Art Education. I left my country to live in Miami with my husband 22 years ago and here we had our two beautiful girls. I was always into arts and crafts, exploring new techniques and artists, studying their books and online classes.
In 2010 we have moved to Mexico, New Jersey and back to Brazil, totaling eight years abroad and at our home town. It was when living back in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2013 that my passion for lettering and fabrics came up. Then I took a certification in Surface Design and several other digital classes from the US and UK.
In 2015 we came back to Miami and my career as Surface Designer and Lettering Artist really started when I opened my company. Let’s Chalk and registered my brand. It’s been almost five years now and I am very proud to say that I’ve custom designed and created beautiful murals and chalkboards for several businesses and homes/Interior Designers in Dade, Broward and even in Brazil. Seeing happy clients is my moto!
Last year I had the honor to participate at Art Basel Miami week – Red Dot expo with my artistic creations. Nowadays, I am able to create even digital art for wallpapers, fabric and every surface of products but always keeping the passion for murals as the top of the list! I’m ultimately focusing my creations to a Kids Decor collection of my own products and opening for licensing anytime too!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Moving so many times because of my husband’s job was not an easy task but I’ve never stopped! Always learning something new, teaching and creating art was my moto. Just keep growing and improving one day at a time! Never stop dreaming
We’d love to hear more about your art.
My company is specialized in creating murals, illustrations and chalkboard style lettering menus. All hand drawing art and design conception done exclusively by me. That’s the best way to guarantee the superb quality of the final art product that my clients deserve. I don’t substitute “my hands” for anyone else.
When I have a helper for large projects, I make sure that the final stages are done by me only. I’m very meticulous and professional. I’m proud to have worked with Knaus Berry Farm, West Elm, Buenos Aires Bistro, 900 Novecento Restaurant, Gelato-Go and many others.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I always recommend practicing A LOT! Study, practice, repeat. Drawing and painting is like going to the gym. It has to be done everyday! Another important thing is to be up to date with the medias, art technologies and materials to improve the skills and attract more clients. Innovating is key.
