Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica W.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My DJ career began as an outlet to free my schedule post grad school to start my business but quickly took the front seat and has put me in places I would’ve never dreamt of. My name specifically came from my love of whiskey and my knowledge of marketing. I knew that a non-traditional DJ name would make everyone take a second look, and I knew that my work ethic would make everyone stay.
Music is a lot like whiskey. When it’s quality and mixed right, it goes down smooth and makes you feel oh-so-good. I am basically a curator of premium blends. Known as The Whiskey Chick when I’m on the 1s and 2s, my DJ sets are enticing and intoxicating. As a spirit would, I take my audiences on a transcendent journey. Pulling from my Haitian roots and Montreal upbringing for island flair, I blend doses of old and new school hip-hop, to the elevation of instrumentals on a slow jam you thought you’d heard before—my flow is international, but hits home with every listen. I have the ear of a musician, those childhood piano and drum lessons were a marinade for my current Miami spice.
Has it been a smooth road?
A smooth road? of course not. Worth the struggles?? I would say YES 10x over!! This journey has definitely proved that I am a lot more strong minded that I tend to give myself credit for. I get on stage and I already have three strikes against me, the color of my skin, my gender and being a “newbie” on the block. This industry is not for the weak hearted at all. You’ll hear more nos than you hear yes. You’ll be under minded before you’re respected, and even STILL they’ll make you feel like you don’t deserve their respects. But the good thing is… you don’t do it for them, you do it for YOU!!!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a female DJ or a Girl DJ if you will. Although my favorite genres to play are old school hip hop and RnB or Caribbean music, specifically kompa, I can play any genre the event calls for. I’m best known for my song selections and blending techniques.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The Industry will definitely take a shift in the next decade. I think it will be alot more women heavy in some parts and have a more sought after virtual sector. As for me I definitely see myself doing bigger events worldwide such as festivals, concerts etc. and producing as well.
