Thanks for sharing your story with us Kernique. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always had a passion for education. I grew up helping my mom get ready for many “first days of school,” and watched her prepare to welcome new students year after year. It was to no one’s surprise that I became a teacher. I’ve held several roles in the public school system and know first-hand how struggling readers, if not provided with the right support, by the right person, at the right time, can find it difficult to reach their maximum potential and excel academically. Level Up Test Prep and Tutoring was created to not only build important literacy skills but to also boost student academic confidence in an individualized learning space.
Has it been a smooth road?
There has been a spike in the interest and demand for distance academic support as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Facing the challenges of life in quarantine, and having to balance the demands of a growing business, four children (ages six and under), and a marriage to an equally busy school site administrator and small business owner, it hasn’t been a crystal stare. I’ve had many sleepless nights preparing impactful lessons for my clients (after putting my own children to bed). Sacrifice, time management, and the organization has been key.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Level Up Test Prep and Tutoring story. Tell us more about the business.
My experience as an educator, whether it be as a classroom teacher, a reading coach, a curriculum support specialist, or an Instructional Supervisor who supports schools that educate some of the nations most academically fragile students, Level Up Test Prep and Tutoring is dialed into some of the most cutting edge intervention, remediation, and enrichment strategies in education. Our program design provides personalized learning opportunities for K-12 students in the areas of Reading, Writing and Language Arts. We customize our test prep/tutoring plans based on diagnostic data and provide parents with a comprehensive road map that, if followed and supported, will likely result in student academic growth.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Level Up Test Prep and Tutoring was started at a time where distance learning is in the forefront of the educational movement. I do believe that this is the most ideal time to pivot and prepare for the needs of the community as we figure out how to best support parents and students as they navigate their “new normal,” balancing distance learning, homeschooling and pandemic podding. With all of our hearts set on life returning back to “normal,” there is a growing consensus that education as we once knew it, may have a larger virtual presence than before.
