Meet Sofia Rebull

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Rebull.

Sofia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in a big Cuban family in Miami and grew up surrounded by music. My dad is a percussionist and was constantly blasting music throughout my house. He played everything from Celia Cruz and Gloria Estefan, to Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson that’s really where my love for music began. I started singing when I was around five years old. The first time I ever performed, I sang “Oh Happy Day” from Sister Act at my church, but it wasn’t until I was about nine years old when I heard Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You,” that I knew I wanted to pursue music as a career. From that point on, music became everything. I started taking guitar, piano, and voice lessons. Music just consumed my life – it was all day every day.

I continued music throughout high school, where I was a member of my school’s chorus. It was a classical ensemble, which was really different for me, but I learned so much and gained a ton of appreciation for classical music. I now attend the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, and I’m majoring in Contemporary Vocal Performance with a minor in Music Business and Entertainment Industries. I just released my debut single “My Goodbye,” which is available on all streaming platforms (make sure you go check it out!).

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
High school to college was definitely a big transition for me. I went from being THE musician in high school to being A musician when I got campus. I think I struggled with trying to find who I was as an artist. It’s easy to doubt yourself when you are suddenly surrounded by so many talented musicians, but luckily I’ve always had amazing people in my corner. My friends and classmates are a big part of the creative process for me. Their feedback has pushed me to become a better artist, and I’m so grateful for that. My family is also such an important part of my life – they really are my biggest fans and constantly remind me to believe in myself. Because of them, I’ve learned to embrace the changes I’ve gone through as an artist. Every day, I discover a new part of who I am. I’m constantly evolving as both an artist and an individual, and that’s a journey I’ve grown to love.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a singer/songwriter and aspiring artist. I tend to write funk, soul, and pop songs, but I try not to put myself in one genre – I create what I feel. Writing music is always a therapeutic experience for me, but there is no better feeling than performing my music for a crowd. Seeing the way music impacts others and brings people together has to be my favorite part of what I do. Performing on stage makes me feel like me – jamming and dancing with my band and seeing the crowd do the same inspires me to keep making music.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could go back, I would remind myself that perfection doesn’t exist. I don’t think I would have done things differently, but I may have been too hard on myself along the way. As I grow as a person and as an artist, I’ve learned to embrace the journey!
