Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Sarmiento.
Carlos, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I first discovered my passion for cooking when I was in my early teens, to the point where I was aspiring to go to a culinary arts school and become a Chef.
Life, however, had other plans for me. I ended up studying filmmaking and pursuing a career in film/TV and after a few years, I made a career change and have since established myself as seasoned public relations and communications professional.
The one constant factor throughout my life’s professional experiences and travels, has always been and continues to be, my love and appreciation for cultures, cooking, wine and picking up some knowledge on a thing or two.
My hopes are for like-minded people to join me on this new journey through this blog and website as we explore, discover and share savory dishes, tantalizing wines, exceptional restaurants… and much more.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Launching the blog came rather easily and quickly. Given the times we are living in, and Covid-19 limiting us in what we do, I found myself spending a lot of time at home and decided to focus on what I love best… food and wine.
I normally like to invent dishes, put my spin on other recipes and always pair them with the appropriate wine to enhance the culinary experience. Since I already do it anyway, why not document it? And so, Carlos’ Food & Wine was born from that idea.
The most challenging part of this new venture is being able to translate efficiently and concisely what I create into simple directions that people can follow. It is key to keep the recipes simple, yet delectably attractive and appetizing. “I have to make that!” is the ultimate compliment I can get from my readers, and that is what I strive for. That is my goal.
Another critical part to my work is making sure there is a consistency to the tone, look and feel to each blog posting. Posting a good recipe with accessible wines is essential but it is equally integral that I tell a story, transport you to a place in the world where you might actually eat this dish and sip this wine.
Context is very important, so I always try to bring background history and some sort of element of education to each recipe, wine pairing and posting.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Since this is a fledgling endeavor, the only direction for me to go is up! The blog following has been increasing on all social media platforms.
The comments and feedback have been quite uplifting and encouraging. I am happy to say that I have even garnered the attention of wineries and wine distributors for me to be featured in their sites, as well as to showcase their wines and products. I’m really proud of this accomplishment in less than a month’s time.
Of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank my family and friends for their encouragement and support. I get my inspiration from them.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I should have done this earlier! I am having so much fun doing this and being able to share my love and passion for food, for cooking and wine is fantastic.
My hopes are for readers to get inspired to try something new in the kitchen, pair dishes with a wine that they may not have tried before and have fun with it along the way. So, let’s get cooking!
