Meet Carter McAllister of Schmedes McAllister & Associates in West Palm Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carter McAllister.

Carter, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I graduated from Florida State University in 2012 with a bachelor of science in Accounting. From there, I attended Florida Atlantic University, graduated in 2014 with my Masters of Taxation. During my Masters’s degree, I completed all four parts of the CPA exam and received my license shortly after on July 2, 2014. Within a month of completing my Masters, I started at Nowlen, Holt & Miner, PA and Global Trust as a CPA and Wealth Manager, respectively. In 2015 I completed my series 65 exam and became a licensed financial advisor.

In 2016, myself and two other employees at Nowlen Holt & Miner PA left the firm to start our own practice, which eventually came to be Schmedes McAllister and Associates.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wish it was a smooth road getting to where we are at now. Given the protective nature of our industry, you can imagine the legal hurdles we had to navigate after leaving Nowlen Holt & Miner.

In addition, to having to deal with that, Tim Schmedes and I had to detach from a previous partner that is no longer with us due to reasons that cannot be discussed. Fortunately, getting clients was never an issue for either of us. I believe that attributes to the fact that we were born and raised in Palm Beach County.

Schmedes McAllister & Associates – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a fully licensed Certified Public Accounting Firm that offers an array of services to individuals, businesses, and nonprofits. We specialize in tax planning and preparation for individuals and businesses of all sizes. We also offer Family Office services to our High Net Worth clients.

I believe we are most proud of our ability to assess every client’s needs and incorporate that into the way we represent the client no matter the size. Our goal is to have a healthy balance of clients without overwhelming our staff and diminishing our level of service and attention. This is contrary to the typical CPA firm model that tries to onboard as many clients as possible, no matter the workload and level of individual attention.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success comes from a healthy work-life balance, which was not achievable at the previous practice. It’s not a monetary gain that defines success for us.
