Today we’d like to introduce you to Chakirah Samuels.
Chakirah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a makeup artist and mother of three. When I started doing makeup about six years ago, I could not afford the high-end products that I desired, so I started making a few of my own skin and beauty products. When I started to use these products on clients and friends, the response I received was so positive. I knew that this is something that would make me happy. I wanted to be able to provide natural and affordable skincare and beauty products. I worked on a few products over the years but while working full time and doing freelance makeup on the side, I felt I didn’t have enough time to start my business. When I gave birth to my third child, I had to stop working. Now I had no more excuses. I used my free time to build my website and perfect my products. Now I have customers telling me how my products have improved their skin and even their makeup application. Running my own business is so fulfilling.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business on your own is very challenging. I have always been a “do it yourself “ person, so I run my social media, I take my photos, and of course, I make the products. However, being a mom comes first, so if homework or a project needs to get done, then a time may not always agree with me doing a new product launch. At first, I did not have good time management, but now I schedule everything from shipping orders to tweaking my website, this way I have time to be a CEO, a wife, and a mom.
Samuels Crush Beauty – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Samuels Crush Beauty is an all-natural handcrafted beauty and skincare line. Not only to we cater to makeup artists, providing setting sprays, lip glosses, and makeup brush cleaners, but we cater to the everyday person also, providing moisturizing body butters and handmade soaps. I am most proud that my company does not take the word “natural” for granted. Everything is hand made with no unnecessary preservatives added. Not only black-owned but female-owned!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was finally launching my website and getting my first positive review. I was so nervous that people would not love my products as much as I did.
