Today we’d like to introduce you to Bronjelyn Montgomery.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Bronjelyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I’ve always been crafty. I loved anything artistic, including dance. Dance was my number one passion, along with other things such as drawing and writing poetry. Around the age of 11, my aunt would have me to do her hair. It was back when glueing tracks in between your natural hair was a thing! I had no idea that cosmetology would be my career path. In high school, my heart was stuck on dance and fashion. In college, I was well known as the girl that could dance, best dressed, and cutest hairstyles. I would always leave campus every weekend to do friends’ hair and my own. I kept changing my major because none of them were fulfilling.
My dreams of being a professional dancer were crushed by my dad’s wife. She basically told me that dancers didn’t make money, being a dancer wasn’t guaranteed, and she suggested that I try out the medical field. While taking up Health Information Management in college over the summer in Macon, GA, I continued to perfect my craft in doing hair. I then realized that I loved doing hair. I ended up moving back to my hometown Jackson, Ms and enrolled in cosmetology school. From there, I obtained my license in 2014 and moved to Florida in March of 2017. I’ve been a full-time hairstylist ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Since moving to South Florida, I can honestly say that, for the most part, my transition was very smooth. God has been by my side. I moved here without work and in week two, I was working. It wasn’t the best salon but it was good for a start. The only challenge is standing out from everyone else in this big city.
Pretty Dope Designs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I like to think of Pretty Dope Designs as a corporate umbrella, simply because I do a list of things. For starters, I specialize in hair designs and machine stitched wigs. Secondly, I hand make and sell custom waist beads. This company called Pretty Dope Beads. I also make clothing too. I am most proud of Pretty Dope Designs’ growth, although we have plenty of growing to do! My southern hospitality, kindness, and uniqueness sets me apart from others.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, to me, is achieving anything you set your mind to, the unimaginable. Success is being able to take care of your family and yourself financially without any problems.
