Meet Nyxon of El Camino Media Group in Miami-Dade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nyxon.

So, before we jump into specific questions about your music, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born and raised in Miami-Dade, music has been my life for as long as I can remember. From upright bass in orchestras to guitar/bass/and drums in heavy metal bands, to spitting bars on a four minute beat in the booth, being a musician has just always made sense to me. It’s always felt right and came easy. In 2012, I was the drummer of a metal-core band called “Ideals of the Corrupt.” While gearing up for the show, our bassist introduced me to a local hip-hop artist “Cracc Cobain,” and things were never the same after that. The bassist (now our in-house producer “Genocide Beats”) is a childhood friend, so after the band broke up, I’d always hang out with him and he always hung out with Cracc.

Well, Genocide and Cracc were starting up a label from scratch at the time, and since I was always in bands with Genocide, they brought me into what is now our label “El Camino Media Group.” Originally, they wanted to sign our band “Ideals of the Corrupt,” but since we were no longer together, that plan never happened. One day I was hanging out with Genocide when he put on a beat and asked me if I could write anything to it. Twenty minutes later, I had a sixteen and laid it down on Genocide’s makeshift studio. Everyone in the room was shocked, and Genocide sent the verse over to Cracc. When I tell you that I started rapping overnight, I really did. Fast forward through five years of constant planning and dead-end jobs to 2018, where I finally dropped my first official album “i-heathen” on all media platforms, followed by my video remix series on YouTube called “Throwaway Thursdays” and much more.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not. The road less traveled is never a smooth road, especially when you’re of Scottish decent with long red hair and grizzly beard living in Miami, Florida. Take that and put it in a music genre that I’m a guest in, you bet it’s going to be struggling after a struggle. Not to mention, I am an independent artist, which means all creative and promotional duties all relies on me and my own resources.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am part of an independent music label currently based in Miami, called El Camino Media Group. Each one of us comes from different walks of life and musical influences, which I think is what sets us apart. While we are currently a label with hip hop artists, it is very important to us that we bring in more artists of all genres to eventually join the group. While I do have a say in important matters, my main focus is the music and bringing underground hip hop to the forefront, while also shining light to other deserving independent artists out there.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
In the world of underground hip hop, success is defined differently than mainstream music. I personally don’t prioritize fame and acclaim like other artists. My main definition of success is being able to support myself and my family while creating music that makes sense to me. Creating a loyal fanbase is what really makes an independent artist successful and that’s the current focus right now. I have noticed more listeners as time goes on (from different parts of the world) on all media platforms in my music. As a hip hop artist, consistency is key and bringing more music to the fans will only increase the success.
