Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony and Luis Lloret.

Anthony and Luis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My father bought the business in the 80s were he worked as a foreman since he came from Cuba in 1959. I grew up at the shop learning from him another specialized bookbinder. I did an apprenticeship under were I learned to rebind and bind old and new books, newspapers, magazines. Our machines date back to 1905 where we set our new book orders. Now that most printing is digital, we also do on demand books ,and dissertation for local universities. Like flu, nova um Carlos Albizu Fau along with anybody who want to write or make their own books. We work with real-estate and architects and fashion companies help design and develop unique and different bookbinding techniques that are different from the norm. We bind yearbooks for the Miami Dolphins and local schools , media book kits I can go on and on we love what we do and my dad 86 still comes in to work everyday my son 3rd generation is currently at the shop with me and my brothers still come in to help me run the shop I am truly blessed to do what I do and still work with family and friends which makes everything a little easier we are the only or one of the last real bookbinders left in Florida and has been around since the 1960s We are. Still servicing all local printers and that customers that comes in with one old bible to rebind or a book the dog chewed up! Welcome to visit any day 7am to 5pm mon threw Fridays. Even Saturdays for those who can’t make it during the week Thank for your interest we look forward to meeting you personally and see for yourself our unique passion for the hard and soft covered Books

Has it been a smooth road?
Struggles is an understatement. Dad worked here putting us through school. With the extra money he got from the old coke machine that is still in our warehouse, he kept it going when all odds were against us. Print media has changed but we just developed new innovative ways to keep it going. The smell of a hardcover book and paper in your hands still has its place nothing like physically holding a book in your hands and I’ve had my own share of obstacles trying to keep the building in order and machines maintained still running.

In 1930, Ludlow make slugs for gold lettering by hand.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the D&B Bookbinders story. Tell us more about the business.
Were one of the last real bookbinders we specialize in new and old books all local printers use our churches and temples. Rebind their hymnals and prayer books with us from rebinding of old Miami beach plat books. For the city of Miami beach to binding a personal children’s book for the mayor of Hialeah. What I’m most proud of has been seeing customers leave happy with our work.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Media has changed they told us books will not be around very much longer but there still people out there that want their own storybooks bound , if you can’t see and feel it in your hands and physically hold it can’t be seen and felt in an iPhone it’s not the same experience we are still rebinding old books passed down from generation to generation cookbooks Recipes from mom and grandma letters to our children bound for future generations to see and hold . Things have changed but not with digital printing, everyone can tell their story, write their kids book professionally done for half the cost. Before, you had to go to a big printing company and the cost was out of site. Now, anyone can get as many books as they want 1 or 1000. Cheaper than ever. So that makes binding books popular and easier to do than ever.
