Today we’d like to introduce you to David Hartmann.
David, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I come from an entrepreneurial family where both my parents have their own businesses. My brother and I took that inspiration to follow the same path. I started my company, The SilverLogic, while in college only building websites and some apps. Over the years, we added more services, becoming a full-stack software development company and shifted our focus to very complex systems themed around digital transformation and business automation. We’ve grown from about six employees 3-4 years ago to forty employees and 100+ clients now.
In 2015, I became the CTO and Co-Founder of VuPulse, a revolutionary marketing solution that increases the effectiveness of digital advertising by creating Intelligent Hyperlinks that route each customer from the ad directly to the platform where the customer will most likely consume the product, no matter how many platforms.
In 2017, I led The SilverLogic’s team to win several hackathons, one of them being the overall Money 20/20 hackathon competition 1st place defeating teams from all over the country, including teams from Silicon Valley.
In 2018, I was invited to join as a mentor for the startup mentorship programs Tech Runway and The Venture Mentoring Team (VMT).
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Retaining talent is a big challenge in any industry, but especially in tech, it is a huge hurdle, with most employees only staying one to two years in one place before switching companies. In our early days in 2014/15, this almost ended our company as we lost three employees to another company when we were only a total of 7 or 8 team members. From that day forward, I made it my mission to build a culture that could transcend beyond the industry standard. We introduced a very cohesive family-like team structure where each individual has been very empowered to make a difference in the company as we grew.
When we came across another challenge in this field of competitive salaries and personal growth through seeking new positions, we came up with a milestone program that allowed employees to know objectively what they need to do in order to receive a raise to their base salary. I wanted to make it that no employee has to ever come up with the courage to ask, “Can I have a raise?” again. Instead, we turned those conversations into brainstorming how to best align each employee’s vision with the path of the company so that personal growth of each employee was aligned with the overall growth of the company.

Having different points of view from everyone around me has helped me over the years to achieve my goals. Running a company often means wearing many hats and working with many startups has given me the opportunity to experience the growth of so many companies at once that I’ve been able to gain a tremendous amount of experience in just a couple of years helping me see businesses and their processes from many angles.
