Meet Jessica Bethel of 4eyedcameragirl in Delray Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Bethel.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My passion for photography began in high school; I originally began taking a photography class in the 9th grade as an elective. I honestly had no real interest because crazy enough, I hated the darkroom, but I continued to keep it as an elective. In the 10th grade, I was encouraged by my photography teacher and a friend (hi Stephanie!) to really take photography seriously. That was a pivotal moment for me because it was amazing to see another black woman in art/photography and ultimately I discovered a creative outlet. From then on, I never stopped pursuing my love for photography. I eventually went onto receiving a B.A. in Art & Art History with a concentration in photography.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road was not smooth at all. In the beginning, it really was deciding if I wanted to pursue a degree in photography and having my parents really understand the plan I saw for myself. Eventually, I decided that was the path I wanted to take full time yet I encountered obstacles of doubt and not feeling worthy enough as a photographer. I struggled to find my ultimate purpose and what I wanted my work to say to my viewers. My doubt got the best of me to the point I turned down many opportunities because I didn’t feel I was worthy enough. Do I regret it? No, because it was a lesson I had to learn the hard way. I am in a unique place in my life now where the chatter in my brain no longer phases me and I have accepted my purpose here.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with 4eyedcameragirl – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I would consider myself a fine art photographer. I specialize in portraits, concepts, and dabbling with documentary/travel photography. I mainly use a film camera as my choice to shoot with specifically a 120 mm. I love the raw feel of analog photography and historically with photography, it’s the purest form of photography. Studying the history of photography in school gave me a deeper appreciation for film photography and photography as a whole. The power we possess as photographers is timeless and important. I believe what sets me apart would be the  “look” of my photos, I’ve been told that my photos tell a story which is what I aim for.  I want each photo to tell a unique story, whether it’s about the individual or what is in the photo.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am excited to continue my education within the arts, aiming to begin an MFA program in 2021. As a creator in different areas, I am a yogi (@4eyedgirl), I love books and have a book club (@literaturenoirclub), and I am big on health and wellness. I am hoping to expand on each aspect. I am looking forward to evolving and learning in all areas of my life. I have many projects set up and ready to go, just waiting to go outside after the “rona” is over and create/collaborate.
