Meet Mark Kuys of Tanner Lamb and Associates in Deerfield Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Kuys.

Mark, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a young boy growing up in South Africa, life wasn’t all that easy. From a young age, I had to learn how to deal with hardships and struggles. Don’t get me wrong my childhood was fun, amazing and I learned so many life lessons along the way. Living conditions was bad, living in government housing from the age of 9 till the age of 14 was eye-opening but the good part of it all was knowing my mom was doing everything she can to get us out of there, and she did all through hard work and the life experience gained and the lessons learned was priceless.

I knew I wanted to be somebody one day not just a statistic or a sad story. If you want something so bad, you make it happen because no one else will do it for you.

I worked for a lawn service company from the age of 9 till 12. I went on selling garbage bags in stacks in rich neighborhoods till I was 15 and then I started my first restaurant job where I met people from all walks of life. I was fascinated with meeting new people and learned great customer service skills and communication skills from working in food and beverage industry all of these steps were humbling to say the least. I went on left the country after finishing up school trying my hand in the super yacht industry in Europe and I feel like that was my first real setback and failure. I came back crushed but once again, it was another lesson learned and one step closer to where I want to be. I went back to what I knew best, restaurants. It wasn’t long till I needed a new challenge and growth and started working in project management for local events and logistics company in South Africa.

Wanting to travel once again, I came to the states where I met my wife and the rest is history. I started working in food and beverage services in the united states mainly between Boynton Beach and Boca Raton area since 2011 and after going through all necessary procedures I got to follow my life long dream of getting started in the real estate industry since early 2019, the biggest challenge of them all for me so far and of course I picked the profession that’s oversaturated, not like there’s a shortage of real estate agents in South Florida, knowing its part of the process and one of the necessary steps I need to take to get where I want to be in life, owning commercial real estate.

I knew it was going to be tough, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy but I was fortunate enough of picking the right brokerage and mentor to get me on the right track. Dylan Lamb my mentor and broker along with Rob Tanner from Tanner lamb and associates. When I started I got discouraged and no momentum was gained, I wasn’t making any progress, it was going nowhere and I knew I would have to change how I’m doing things. With great knowledge and guidance from Dylan, I started making progress he made me understand what we do and how we go about doing things. How important each transaction is and what sets us apart the most, always choosing relationships over transaction. Of course, we like to get paid but he helped me understand why I chose this profession in the first place and what I love about it.

For me, it’s simple. I love working with people, helping people and that’s what it’s all about. I get to do what I love. Make people happy. Help them. Be active a part of the community and best of all, I get to do it in sunny South Florida. Once I went back to the core from where it all started and why I started doing this in the first place, success followed. Calls were made, relationships were built and closings followed. Today I feel hopeful and I feel like the dreams and aspirations I had as a little boy, well I’m living it. Of course, I’m nowhere near where I want to be, I will forever be hungry and humbled by all the different roads I had to walk to get to where I am today and continue building on all success and failures.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not, Florida is overrun with realtors, there is definitely no shortage of realtors. Getting started was tough, months went by and not a single transaction was made. Everyone B got in contact with either had a realtor already or someone in the family is realtor. It cost me money B did not have at the time to get started and all B needed was the chance to prove myself and with the support of my Broker Dylan B eventually did.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Defining success is a tricky question. I believe everyone will have there own opinions on it to me personally:

Success is defined by how far you have come everyone will differ in this aspect; I personally measure how far you have come as any improvement you have made in life that benefits you.

I measure it not only by the what have you achieved but how many times have you failed and got back up, kept moving forward.

Failure is a big part of success if you fail and keep moving forward, learn from the mistakes you made and better yourself or the situation that’s success, not moving forward from failure however is quitting.

Success is achieving that one goal at a time to achieve your ultimate goal success is purpose.
