Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Nigro.
Heather, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story behind the lens reminds me a bit of the known and unknown world that occurs when you think of the Hero’s Journey. As a child, I had a deep love of the arts, often retreating into my own creativity through painting, drawing, sewing and even sculpture. It was an escape for me from the environment I was in. I was different than most children, and as a result, saw the world uniquely in a very heightened way. There’s something special about being a keen observer and listener – you learn a lot just by what is occurring around you.
As a teenager, I was gifted a used Olympus OM-10 camera by a family member because I wanted to take a photography class in high school. I remember being very excited about this new tool that I had, with the ability to not only capture my visions but also process them in the darkroom. I loved developing the film and seeing the magic unfold right in front of me. It was a new world to me that I was overjoyed to immerse myself in.
My photography teacher, on the other hand, didn’t share the enthusiasm as I did for my fledgling talent. I recall wanting to take an advanced level class (which she had to grant permission for) and her telling me that she didn’t think photography “was really the right fit for me” and declined my request. Mind you, I received an average “C” in the class, but I still wanted to learn more. In typical Moxxii fashion, I marched into my guidance counselors office and requested this teacher’s decision be overturned. The counselor agreed and I’m so thankful she did. I went on the following year to win an award for my photography in a juried exhibition.
Having a camera became a way for me to not only capture but connect with others. On the weekends, I would spend most of my free time going to see live music with friends, and it was just a no brainer to bring my camera with me. Something clicked for me while I was at the Wetlands Preserve in New York City that I could pair my love of photography with my passion for music and travel. It just made sense.
I joke that my camera is the ultimate gateway drug to living life fully. It’s always been my ticket to the most interesting places and people. This marks my 25th year from when I picked up a camera. It’s been a humbling journey to see my work featured in publications such as Billboard, in galleries, on album covers, and in the private homes of collectors. My creative eye has expanded to not only include photography, but also art direction, and styling. At the end of the day, it goes back to my core of wanting to connect with others and create using any avenue possible.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been so many lessons I’ve learned and continue to learn on this creative path. One ties into the origin of the name for the Moxxii Photo. The name comes from a play on the word “moxie”, which by definition means having “courage or determination”. A strong belief in yourself and vision is imperative if you’re going to make it as a creative – you must be persistent. For me when someone says “no”, it just means “not right now”. Find other avenues to execute your vision if the current one you are pursuing is blocked. Never give up on yourself. The right people will take notice of your talent and determination to support you in your journey.
I also think professionalism will set you apart from others. It’s important to set the precedent. Have contracts in place. Show-up prepared and on time. Dress accordingly based on the project and team you are working with. Be positive even if everyone else is having a meltdown. Some think that their work will be enough to get them a particular job, but people like to hire those that they trust and can count on at the end of the day. I don’t care how many contacts you have in your Rolodex – there is no replacing hard work or shortcuts to success. If you have the ability to be resilient, your work will endure despite all odds.
Please tell us about Moxxii Photo.
Moxxii Photo is focused on capturing as well as creating the moment. Photography, Art Direction, and Styling are my specialties. I consider myself a visionary with a unique palette and focus on bringing creative ideas to life.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
First discovering New York City as a child and taking the train there from suburban Connecticut. I always felt it was my first true love in life. It was exhilarating and a place where I found inspiration and a sense of belonging. The energy there made me feel alive, and still does.
