Meet Manuel Abaunza of Muyfresco in West Kendall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Manuel Abaunza.

Manuel, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My parents wanted me to study medicine, become a doctor, or get into politics. I knew I didn’t want to do any of those things. I didn’t really know what I wanted to study. I knew that I had to pick something and made sure I stuck to it. My sister had given me the advice to commit to something so I chose psychology. I figured that I could learn about others at the same time I was learning about myself.

While I was majoring in Psych, I picked up other subjects like art, music, theatre, and marketing. I hoped what I’d learn would help me create something that would provoke thought, and provide a different approach to life rather than the conforming standard. For example: self-awareness. We’re all human and we all process and react to information differently. Once we accept who we are we can accomplish so much more. I’m building a brand to inspire others to dig deeper and live for themselves. Everyone has a chance to grow beyond what they can imagine if they just TRY.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I can’t say its been a smooth road but I’m constantly learning through trial and error. Figuring out things on my own or constantly asking questions. I take things as is and learn to cope with it or work around it.

Please tell us about Muyfresco.
Muyfresco is primarily about living for yourself and thinking beyond what society tells you to. I am known for being unapologetically myself. Muyfresco believes in the freedom of expression. Reminding us that being yourself is free and we should never conform to other people’s opinions. We express these beliefs through art and clothing. I am most proud of of being able to work with local talent and creatives from my community, all willing to come together, mesh aesthetics and create something. Intellectual curiosity.
