An import from Kingston, Jamaica by way of London, England, Tamara studied fashion at Miami’s International Fine Arts College. While styling music videos, fashion shoots and working for acclaimed makeup artists, Jamie Melbourne, Tamara began applying wedding make-up for friends. Recognizing the growing demand for applying make-up and eyelashes, Tamara created Ohh! LASHES.
Tamara’s decision to have a clean, chemical-free pregnancy is what set the stage for her love and extensive knowledge of all whole foods and clean, limited ingredient products. Tamara tirelessly researches every material she uses before ever applying on a client; additionally, she has made a conscious choice to use only American-made goods. Tamara and Ohh! We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh my goodness, where do I start. It’s been so long. It feels like a lifetime ago, and also as if it were yesterday. Time waits for no ‘woman’ and I’ll have you know I have some pretty feministic views. Anyway, focus! In a word, that’s me. Complete lack of ‘focus’ –unless I’m lashing, then I’m razor-focused and a perfectionist. About 11 years ago, while studying at Florida College of Natural Health, a fellow student asked if I would be a guinea pig for lashes. I obliged… Worst decision.
Lashes were not then what they are now. They felt like thick pieces of plastic. It was awful and hell to remove. Fast forward two years and the photos I would see looked so pretty –and way more natural than my guinea pig episode. At the time, there were two main lash extensions schools: I picked one and fell in love with the whole process. The art of the application, the relationships built while lashing clients who turned into friends, the look of shock and awe when they saw themselves in the mirror. The warm feeling of self-satisfaction that I created that on their face –I made them feel that way. I put a smile on their face and a skip in their step. I made people look at them differently, including their spouses and loves ones noticed them. I made them just that much happier. That was it! That was all I needed, and Ohh! Lashes was born.
I used to be mobile but that soon got exhausting. I had a young child at home and working from early morning hours till past midnight was just too much. So I searched for a space and finally found the building we currently reside in. (I say reside because it’s our home away from home). I’m a people pleaser if you didn’t catch that from my prior sentences. So growth came out of necessity. I can’t say “no” and hated to turn people away, so I had no choice but to grow. We are now moving to an even newer, more updated location and expanding our team and space. Our lash team is Everything! It takes a village to grow a baby and this is our baby.
