Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcela Alma.
Marcela, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Medellin Colombia, from an early age I had a passion for fashion, my father worked in the most important textile company in the country, he was head of quality control of fabrics and brought home samples that I used to play with to make skirts, tops and simple things. I draw clothes and enjoyed been a “personal shopper” for my friends at school. My life anyway took an unexpected course, perhaps because I was very young when I decided to study dentistry. I graduated as a dentist and then I did a postgraduate in hospital management. I leave the country to go to London and to travel and study some English. Then I came to the United States and I realized that to practice my profession of dentist I must study another 3 years to validate my title for that reason I decided to leave forever my career of health.
I began to work as a model for commercials and advertising campaigns and this way I met Gio Alma, the best fashion photographer in the city, we got married and I began to learn from the world that I always wanted to be part of. I worked as his producer at the beginning and little by little I got more involved with the work of fashion stylist. The beginning was very slow because I became a mother and the first years were complicated, now I can feel fulfilled. I dedicate myself totally to my fashion company, I do the fashion styling for clients and celebrities, photos and videos. I am a personal shopper and I love directing and producing fashion shows.
I make appearances in different medias to talk about fashion and give advice. I have been invited from universities to give talks, now I can say that my dream finally came true.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The language and motherhood away from family.
