Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Montero.
Erika, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, the first thing that I can share with you, it was never had a plan to emigrate from my country. And life always offers me the best. I am from Venezuela. In 2011, I settled down in the city of Miami. I came with my family: Husband and two kids, they are ten years apart. It’s like having two “only child.”
My life as a mompreneur began a long time ago. I worked for ten years in a prestigious company in Venezuela; I had a successful career in Human resources. On the other hand, I was looking for a better balance in my life; and in 2007, I founded a consulting company with two partners, specifically in training. During this year, my second son was born. I have been working as a consultant, facilitator for training, and instructional designer. And, of course, all experiences that come with your own business.
When I decided to emigrate, I felt needed to connect with the place where I had arrived, so I created Doralkidsideas.com. It’s a directory blog for parents who are living in Doral. When I moved here in 2011, I needed information for my children like Where is the school? How is it working? Where they can practice swimming, soccer, etc. So, I decided to put this information in one place: Doralkidsideas.com.
With time, I found that I very savvy techie. To be honest, I thought everyone follows the digital rhythm. So, one day I felt the inner call to share my knowledge. I decided to research and found that’s true: The digital divide is real and affects more women than men. As a result, I created SoyCyberMujer, and my mission is to empower Latino women in the use of technological tools that contribute to increasing the digital productivity of their businesses.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Well, as an immigrant, you need to start again. One of the biggest challenges has been to speak English correctly. It’s like to be a star from your own movie: learn a new language after 30 and don’t die trying. And, of course, to connect with new people, create relationships, contacts, and affects. Now, I am delighted, all my experiences have helped me to grow and thrive in this country. For me, the key is our attitude to facing the challenges.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
@soycybermujer is a platform to empower women in the development of digital skills. I teach women to create online courses and use digital tools. For example, I have a class to teach Canva. Also, I am working as a consultor to create a landing page, email marketing strategies. As always say, I have a flirtation with digital marketing; however, my core is to work in digital tools that can increase productivity. Also, I receive invitations to share my story in different events as a speaker. I am proud of the gratitude I receive from my clients, a lot of them feel that can learn easy, quick and obtain results.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to consolidate my personal brand and increase my reach to help more women to develop digital skills an be more productive in their lives.
