Meet Kitty Curtis Milfort of Monsieur Poutine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kitty Curtis Milfort.

Kitty, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been in and out of the beauty and hospitality industries for pretty much my entire adult life. I moved to Miami about five years ago and found steady work doing hair and bartending on the side. Once I met my husband, we realized his dream of opening a poutine food truck was really something we could bring to fruition. We used the money we received from our wedding to buy our first food truck and launched Monsieur Poutine in October of 2018!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all! We’ve run into several obstacles along the way, mainly because we were self funded. Food trucks are often older trucks, and ours is a 1988 Chevy P-30 so we ran into a bunch of mechanical issues in the beginning and that definitely made things difficult. We had someone break into our truck right before a big event once, that day was so discouraging! Luckily, we’ve always had each other to lean on, and that’s all anybody ever really needs.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We’re the only Poutine based catering company in South Florida! Poutine is a Canadian staple, you can find it everywhere from gas station stops to five star restaurants in Montréal. We realized South Florida had a good grip on pretty much every other cuisine but no one had figured poutine out yet so we decided it was about time. We’re known for our buffalo chicken and barbecue pulled pork poutines, they’re our most popular!

What were you like growing up?
I’ve wanted to own my own business for as long as I can remember. I started working as soon as I possibly could at 14. I used to find ways to make extra money however I could. One year I burned CD’s for people as a side hustle at Christmas time in high school and made almost $1k! I just found selling a product so satisfying. I’ve been that way throughout my entire life. I think I’ll always be the kind of person who needs to create things. Business building is so special to me and I’m so thankful to be able to do what I love, with the person I love. 🙂
