Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Medina.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Juan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, I always had a creative influence flowing through my life, but I really never thought anything of it. My mom grew up loving to paint and that’s how she expressed herself. I loved art as she did but I figured my drawing/painting skills weren’t the best. But other than painting, my mom is a full-time graphic designer which that career path always interested me, but again I never thought anything of it. But growing up loving technology and smartphones, I loved to take pictures with my phone’s built in camera to see what I captured for fun. Then growing up in school, I pursued my love for technology but soon went short as it got complicated and didn’t really excite me like it used to.
So part of that technology program, I was planned in a creative program’s class. There I fell in love with photoshop, which I learned effortlessly and wanted to learn more. Just like that, I was adobe certified in all the programs. I then started bringing up my iPhone photography up a notch using my new set of skills. Then I picked up my first ever Canon DSLR t3i that my mom had lying around the house and it opened this world of capturing images that changed my perspective and fueled me. After practicing and studying by myself the art of using a camera, I had the opportunity to volunteer in a Non-profit Organization called Making A Difference Everyday (@Made210) where they let a young high school kid filled with all these creative ideas to capture kids/young adults volunteering and making a difference in our community. Having that experience and applying what I have learned to keep shooting and shooting until many years later. I decided this was my dream all along and I wanted to pursue this as my career. I bought new equipment and using all my experience and everything I have learned to flourish my creative work for the world. I kept shooting and started to build up a portfolio were then I began to start charging for my photoshoots. In my four years of being a photographer, I never stop learning or growing.
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey to becoming a photographer hasn’t been a smooth road as the journey of growing and learning is always gonna come with obstacles that we face along the way. One of the biggest obstacles I have faced and it’s one we all face sometime is comparison/second guessing. Being in a very creative city that is Miami, there is a large number of creators that roam our city just as passionate as I am. They are super talented and that can make you doubt yourself or even make you lose your passion. But it is important that we are reminded that no matter the amount of creators there are, my work is not like others and their work is different than mine. We are all unique in our craft and that’s what makes us shine!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
My name is Juan Medina and my business name is Juansvisuals. I am a freelance photographer who specializes in portraiture, lifestyle, and event photography. I’m proud of all the amazing people and companies that I have had the privilege to work with it and what sets me apart from other photographers is my attitude. I’m super open and helpful when it comes to working with new or consistent clients.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Miami is a very special city. It’s such a magical place filled with some many creators that have different stories coming from different backgrounds. All that diversity in one city where people from all over the world come and experience that. The only thing I would say I dislike about my city is parking and tolls. I understand the city needs the money to keep the city running and progressing, but it really affects locals that live dealing with this issue.
