Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Gorra.
Michelle, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Miami, and am the daughter of Cuban and Venezuelan immigrants. From an early age, I would draw impulsively on anything I could get my hands on, from walls to large sketchpads with innumerable pages. My interest in art led me to eventually pursue specialized education in visual arts in two renowned MDPS magnet schools. Being in both South Miami Middle and DASH helped me gain experience and insight into developing my work, as well as the opportunity to enter contests such as Scholastic and Young Arts. After graduating from DASH in 2014, I enrolled at Miami International University of Art and Design to pursue a BFA in Fashion Design. There, I participated in CFDA and had the chance to further my knowledge regarding a career in fashion better.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When it comes to struggles, I am not a stranger to them, nor do I let them affect me when it comes to accomplishing my goals. Since birth, I was diagnosed with a moderate hearing loss and was also born with a congenital defect-microtia of the right ear, meaning that I was born without an ear.
Please tell us about your art.
I do freelancing with fine art and fashion illustration, and commissions of portraits in pastels, pencils, and oil paint, which is what I specialize in.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
What I have learned throughout the years is that there is no better time than the present to take risks and that you should give 110% of yourself if you want to succeed and accomplish all of your goals. If you do not put forth the necessary effort to fulfill your dreams, the regrets will weigh heavier than the curiosity and what if’s in your mind.
