Meet Jovans Lorquet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovans Lorquet.

Jovans, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Jovans Lorquet; I am currently an independent Musician and singer. I originally grew up in Haiti and was raised in a musical environment. My parents made sure that me and my two siblings were able to take music classes starting from a very young age. I started playing the violin and later taught myself how to play the piano and the guitar. Growing up, I was very involved in the music ministry at my church; I learned how to sing by being in the choir and listening to gospel artists.

In 2010 while I was still living in Haiti, I witnessed a massive earthquake, which caused a lot of damage in my surroundings. As a result, I had found myself leaving the country in order to continue my schooling in the United States. I never gave up on music and later gravitated more towards R&B and Haitian Konpa music. I currently have two albums available on all platforms and I am working on a third. I mostly sing in Haitian creole but I plan on incorporating more songs in English.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, as I am sure for many artists there a plenty of setbacks. I have often found myself trying to achieve things on my own due to the lack of support or sponsors. It is still the case today, I have either financed all my music videos on my own, or even sometimes they have been produced and shot by me. Everything is still a work in progress and I am eager to see what the future holds.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I represent myself as an artist; I am known for singing Zouk, Kompa, and R&B. I am most proud of how far my music has made it. I am aware that I do not have a huge fan base but it is actively growing, especially in music communities such as Soundcloud. What sets me apart from others is that I have a unique sound and style. I try to be myself as much as possible.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have many people to thank, Such as Joseph Lissade Jr, a long time friend who has embraced my musical ideas from the beginning. Bachelor Jean Pierre who has helped me with my music videos at the very beginning. My siblings, Joffrey and Joselle who are basically always there to help me with live performances. My girlfriend Schibéa Pavilus, who has been there for me always.
